INITIATIVE
There is one quality of the human mind which is
valued highly by the business world and which very
often means success to the individual, while the lack
of it means failure. It is the decisive force in one’s life
which we call initiative. Some people easily acquire
the habit of doing things without being directed—
things that need to be done. Like every other quality,
initiative is a thing to be developed. What is this high
ly to be desired quality, and how is it to be acquired?
is the question of the ambitious man who feels his
power but lacks ability to use it in a way that pays
Elbert Hubbard said “initiative is doing what needs
to be done without being told”. The same writer also
said: “The world reserves its big prizes for but one
thing, and that is initiative”. Initiative is a result of
constructive thought and action. It is a result of prop
er thinking plus a desire and willingness to work
hard. rI he lazy man has no ambition, and likewise he
necessarily has no initiative. The big prizes of the
world are awarded to those who have ambition, initia
tive, purpose and conviction, and who are not afraid
to work to gain recognition—men who make up their
minds a thing can be done and will be done.
