PUGH The foundation is in the conscience.—Epictetus. ON THE LANDSCAPE (Editorial in Oregonian) Following the announcement th a t the navy de partm ent will co-operate with the Oregon state high way commission in preserving the landscape from desecration, it is peculiarly interesting to the news th at the southeastern council of the General Federa tion of Women’s Clubs, representing ten states, has voted unanimously to recommend th at all club women give preference to products which do not advertise on billboards at the expense of scenery. The move is especially significant as evidence of the unmistakable trend of public opinion. But the incident would have been impossible a generation ago, for the sentiment did not then possess the mechanism of expression now made possible by organization of which the federation is a type but is by no means the sole representative. O ther states and other societies have adopted resolutions to the same purpose—some of them more directly suggestive of the boycott principle than the one here alluded to, in which term s persuasive rath er than m andatory are used. There is, however, no gain saying the force of organization coupled with a popu lar idea. L o g g e rs P ool H a ll CONFECTIONERY Up-to-Date Goods Always Fresh W. J. Paulnian, Prop. Port Orford, Ore. HATTON Prop. j j ----- With the completion of the Rogue River bridge and the uncompleted stretch of work north of M arsh field, the Roosevelt highway will become one of the great arteries of travel between the north and the south, owing to its freedom from snow and ice in win ter and extreme heat in summer, and with the linking up of the present highway system of the coast states with Alaska on the north and South American on the south, plans for which are under way, travel over this scenic route will assume proportions little vis ioned now. At this time, therefore, when the same may be accomplished a t the minimum cost, historic spots and areas of unusual natural scenic beauty should be ‘he i Mr and Mrg Fred Selkirk have acquired for the use and enjoyment of the public for the generations to follow. Historic Battle Rock, in the Port Orford harbor, is one of such spots, and the movement now under way to acquire the lands between the Roosevelt highway and Battle Rock, and those of the rock itself, before buildings are erected and prices become too high, is one of much merit.
