Ike's Jazz "Uke" Goes Classical THE NAVY AND ROADSIDE SIGNS The navy departm ent’s determ ination to do no more road advertising in Oregon, coupled with the undertaking on the p art of Commander Best of the Portland recruiting station to have all the navy signs now up taken down, represents, we think, even more than a fine instance of official conform ity to well-con sidered local opinion. It is an example of good con duct and it is virtually certain to serve as an incentive to others. If, it may plausibly be contended, the heads of a great public service can afford to dispense with a form of advertising th at mars the landscape and offends the senses o f a rt and the proprieties, then others also may reasonably be expected to withdraw from this field. Co-operation of Secretary Wilbur, which has made this most recent development possible, will be unani mously commended in Oregon. It is fu rth er to be hoped, of course, that the advertising will be discon tinued not only here but in all non-commercial situa tions in the United States. There is, incidentally, a thought-provoking suggestion of lack of co-operation of the navy’s roadside advertising in the first in stance. The bureau of public roads in the federal de partm ent of agriculture has been campaigning against the very practice which the navy, another departm ent of the same government, has been fol lowing. until now, in Oregon and elsewhere. As an immediate benefit, as a criterion for the future with c c Ponhnir and Frit, «,m„h respect to advertising th at impairs scenery, and a s ,P o rt Orford ware bualness visitors practice in getting two governm ent agencies together hPre lBa‘ weel< A T the incident has a peculiar significance. HOOVER—THE BUSINESS PRESIDEN T Not content to let the afterm ath of the slump in the stock m arket take its course and affect business by reason of rumors and counter rum ors tending to create pessimism, President Hoover has taken the bull by the horns and called upon the industrial giants of the country to get busy and sta rt increased construc tion program s for 1930. Capitol is rallying to the President’s banner and the outlook is daily growing brighter for 1930 to lie a more prosperous year than its preceding brothers. The deft skill of the trained engineer therefore promises to turn w hat might have been a serious depression into one of g reat prosperity. The old way would have been to let everybody get the blues and then change adm inistrations as the only cure. Fortunately for the country the right man was in the rig h t place at the right time and through prom pt action on his p art the danger is largely dis pelled.
