Aug. 9.—(To the Editor.)—It is a long straight road from the north into Port Orford, so smooth, so straight that the senses gradually become lulled with the beauties that Oregon knows so well how to lavish on her roadsides. But no other kind of road could give just the proper introduction to a spot like Port Orford. A sharp turn, a little cluster of stores and homes, then sud denly a vista so overwhelming that to one who has succumbed to the spirit of the long straight road, the things that filled his mind a moment before are gone in a flash. Instead there is the sparkle of the sea far below, blue as the sky, the glittering sands stretching in an unbroken line to the south and peopled only bv scavenging gulls, the sharp somber rocks offshore encircled with the foam of the battering waves, the rustle of dry grass at his feet stirred by the strong cool wind from the Pacific—all these capture his mind and leave room in it only for those thoughts awakened by the scene before him. When this magic has had time to do its work is the time to talk with its people and rediscover something that some of us be lieved had long since passed. The sparkle of the sea is in the eyes of people here, the peaceful beauty of the scene is reflected in their gentle courtesy and charm, even the sound of the waves far below seems an echo of the laughter of the children. Port Orford is a name known to many in all parts of the country from the fame of its cedar, and those who have formed a picture of it from visits to lumbering towns should be pre pared to find a charm here different from what they may have experienced before. It is a place where for some of us it is iust a little easier to get in tune with the infinite and to get the worid back in tune with ourselves. —Ray E. Parmenter. ...... ......... . 'V J .'X
