National character is but the sum of the moral fiber of individuals.—Herbert Hoover. A MAN’S PRICE (Editorial in Williamsport Grit) Every man has his price. It may be low or high, but he has it. In most cases one does not find much difficulty in determining what that price is. If it’s low the task is easy; if high, one may have to calcu late a little. Every man fixes his own price. He may not do so directly, but he does indirectly. He does so by ac cepting the proposition made to him, or by some vol untary act that proclaims what he is. When a man gets something for nothing, when he cheats or de frauds, he fixes his own price, and frequently it is cheap. The lower a man’s moral standards, the less his self-respect and the cheaper his price. He cannot ex pect self-valuation to exceed the estimate of his fel lows. Should he do so he would be disappointed, for the public estimate is always a little lower. The pub lic discounts in its favor a man’s valuation of him self, and never pays the same price twice. There are few “over-estimated” men. True, some men at the lowest price are dearer than they should be, just as some men at the highest price are worth all that’s paid for them. Values in men are not fixed by price but by the worth of them. Some men of extraordinary worth are never paid all they are worth. Such men render service that money alone cannot pay for. In a sense their price is beyond reach. Fortunate is it for all that there are men who place honesty, integrity, character, and reputation above all sordid considerations. Fortunate because, by this high valuation of self, there is established that faith in one another, known as confidence, that enables us all to do business and gain employment. It’s confidence that underlies the great system of credit which is the mainspring of industry and busi ness. The man who fixes his price high and sticks to it is the man who is best able to get what he de mands, if he is worth what he asks. MR. GOODFELLOW (By Dorothy Dix) And there is Bob A. A good fellow. Kindly. Plenty of ability. But nobody wants to do business with him, and in society people flee from him as if he had the leprosy, because of his colossal self-con ceit. Wherever he goes he monopolizes the conversa tion by monologuing about himself and telling how reat and wonderful he is, and what a remarkable amily he has, and how he could have saved the presi dent from making some mortifying mistakes if only he had been consulted. ?
