THE NEWSPAPER MAN
(Editorial in Oregon Journal)
The man who wants free publicity and gives
nothing back besieges all newspapers, and none
more than the up-state editor. The mail overwhelms
newspaper offices with all kinds of copy with a re
quest that it be printed free and “marked copies” of
the paper be sent.
In no activity in the world is there so much en
deavor to get something for nothing as is attempted
on the newspaper man. No activity in the world
gives as much to the public gratis and gets
few
thanks back.
For all the boosting of the community, for all
the constructive agitation, for all the struggle at re
form, for all the appeals in behalf of public move
ments. for all the kindly mention of prominent citi
zens, for all the advocacy of candidates, for all the
free notices, free insertions, free publicity, free ex
ploitation, free advertising and free gifts of space
and influence for community chests, church fairs,
philanthropic endeavor and every kind of public
movement, the community expects in return to lay a
few flowers on the grave of the newspaper man and
let it go at th a t
