O rfo rd dally. News Anniversary Oregon Historical Society Contest The sheriffship of Curry county is no exception to the rule, and ability and efficiency should be the yard stick by which the voters determine their choice at the coming election. En trusted with the collection of all taxes of the county, the office of sheriff is an important one to taxpayers, and a thorough knowledge of all matters relating to the collection of taxes is a prerequisite to the efficient conduct of the office. Last year the sheriff handled approximately $213,000 of tax money, including a considerable sum of back taxes collected. These back, or delin quent, taxes run about nine per cent of the whole, and an efficient tax collector—one versed in the intricacies of the tax laws and the methods to induce payment—can reduce the delinquent tax list materially, and. mind you, every dollar of delinquent tax money collected will go to lessen the tax burden as a whole; there fore, if all delinquent taxes were paid, taxpayers generally would receive a direct benefit in the way of lessened taxes. An efficient sheriff—one having the ability, experience and training—is the friend of every taxpayer in the county, for the reason that he is in position to do a great deal toward reduc ing the delinquent tax list, thus providing for tax reduction gen erally. ( urry county has an opportunity at the coming election to select a man thoroughly grounded in tax collection matters, of wide experience in all duties pertaining to that office, and of unquestioned ability and integrity, in the person of G. W. Norton. No other candidate for the office has had the experience or train ing necessary to properly perform the duties of the office; there fore, voters, regardless of party lines, owe it to themselves to s°e that the office is filled with a man competent to handle the duties of the office in the interest of the taxpayers.
