THE MAJOR ISSUE IN THE TEAPOT DOME
SCANDAL
(Editorial in Engineering and Mining Journal)
Reaffirmation of our national faith that all
persons are equal under the law is the most import
ant and inspiring characteristic of the decision of
the United States supreme court on the legality of
the Teapot Dome lease. The scandal of the illegal
transfer of government property worth $430,000,000,
and the requirement that a refund of $2,000,000 be
made, are overshadowed by the larger fact that
wealthy malefactors “can’t get away with it.”
Not often does our supreme legal authority em
bellish its decisions with such verbal castigations as
judicial indignation felt to be appropriate to the oc
casion. “Illegitimate,” “faithless,” “s i n i s t e r,”
“fraudulent,” are ugly terms, and their significance
is unmistakable. The crime involved bribery and
corruption and betrayal of the public by a high gov
ernment official. That men conspicuous for achieve
ment in the larger fields of business enterprise in this
era of industrial evolution and advancement would
be willing to conspire with a member of the presi
dent’s official family to despoil the nation of its re
sources, and conceivably by such acts to put its se
curity in jeopardy, jars and sours the people’s faith
alike in the honesty of corporate management and in
official integrity and purpose. The decision signifies
that gigantic political debts may not be paid by a gov
ernment officer turned conspirator.
Although humiliated by the evidence of crim
inality in high places, we may yet take heart that jus
tice is able to triumph over every obstacle that mon
ey, legal technicality, and the disintegrating action
of time can oppose or mitigate.

ABOUT THAT HISTORY
Infantile Paralvsls
(Editorial in Harbor.)
Now we’ll ask one. Perhaps the way our east
ern ancestors learned about Port Orford was in read
ing English history. Or maybe they had read about
New Albion, which was Sir Francis Drake’s west
coast of North America. Maybe the children think
William Tichenor discovered Port Orford.
Sir Francis, you know, was one of those discov
erer fellows who was sailing the seas during Queen
Bess’ rule to add more to her kingdom and world.
And so it was that Sir Francis was the first English
man to gaze on the site of Port Orford and what is
now Cape Blanco. Cortez had already subdued Mex
ico and placed her in the Spanish realms along in
1520, but Drake happened along half a century later
and cruising along New Albion's shores (anywhere
from San Diego to Cape San Lucas northward) and
came north as far as “Cape Orford,” now Cape
Blanco. That, then, is about the first mention of this
part of the world and the voyage and discovery was
made in 1579.
PORT ORFORD LIBRARY
Public libraries are a part of our educational
\stem, and the ladies of the Civic Improvement club
•e to be congratulated on the success they have at-
lined in providing library facilities for the coinmun-
y. Much remains to be done, however, and the pub-
? at large can be of great assistance in enlarging
ie scope of the work by assisting in providing addi-
onal books. The library board has designated Sat
rday, November 12, as Book Donation day. and
lose who have books they can and will donate to
pip in this public service are requested to bring or
jnd them to the library on that date. Open house
•om 10 a. m. to 4 p. m. will be kept, and the public
lould respond generously in this worthy work.
