SELF GOVERNMENT
The fundamental principle of American inde
pendence is self government, and we have demon
strated to the world at large that intelligent self gov
ernment is the solution of the governmental prob
lem. Our form of government—as a nation—as a
state—as a county—as a city—as a school or road
district—is founded on this principle. While on rare
occasions bad government has resulted, the fault was
due to the fact that the citizens themselves did not
exercise their constitutional rights.
Of the thousands of incorporated cities and
towns in the United States rare indeed is self gov
ernment bad, and these cities and towns are made up
of average people. Port Orford’s citizenry will av
erage with the rest, and there is no reason to believe
that Port Orford is not capable of efficient self gov
ernment.
Port Orford’s future necessarily rests on good
local government, and to provide such government
Port Orford must incorporate—the • only way in
which it can be provided. Men capable to give effi
cient self government live in Port Orford and own
property here; elect them to office and give them
your support. Efficient self government at reason
able cost will result.

IT’S EVERYBODY’S JOB
The upbuilding of Port Orford is every citizen’s
jol»—the prosperity of the community depends on The Public’s Investment
the united action of all, and all must work as a unit
else nothing worth while can be accomplished. To sit
back and wait until one man accomplishes what he
has set out to do, and will do, without lifting a hand
to help, smacks considerably of the panhandler who
is a. wonderful receiver but contributes nothing to
the good of a community. HoW much better for ev
ery citizen to assist that one man by doing the things
that are necessary to be done from a community
standpoint, rather than sit back and await the re
sults of his actions like dependent children. How
much more manly—more self-respecting— more
sportsmanlike—and how such teamwork would be
appreciated by that one man who is working in every
citizen’s interest. Take counsel with yourself, Mr.
Voter, and see if you are doing the square thing by
that one man.

The ostrich is a funny bird and his counterpart
in one particular at least is found in the man incap
able of reasoning. When something comes up the
ostrich does not understand he attempts to hide his
body by sticking his head in the sand: with the man
described an attempt is made to hide his ignorance
by much loose talk. Neither succeed. Funny birds
indeed.
