CATTLE DIE IN
BARN FIRE ON
Statehouse, Salem, March
In the wee sraa’ hours of Sunday
morning, 3:01 to be exact, the
speaker’s gavel banged down a si
ne die adjournment ending the 41st
legislative assembly.
The law
makers had been going since 9:30
Saturday morning. With the ex
ception of two short recesses for
lunch and dinner, they were in
continuous session for 17 ta hours,
which is a real day’s work. Many
bills were passed during the last
few hours of the session while
many of the solons were snoozing
or too tired to know what it was
all about. Scores of bills were
killed by letting them stay in
committee and many others met
the same fate by the well known
“lay on the table” motion.
The lawmakers spent many
hours of the last day and night
on two bills, the 2-cent a package
cigaret tax, which Just did get by,
and the Burke wine bill, that went
down to defeat by a close vote in
the closing hours of the session.
There is still Borne question among
the legal minds as to the validity
of the cigaret tax bill, inasmuch as
the title of the bill is under ques
tion, which would rule it void if
such is the case. Then, on the
other hand, it is believed the gov
ernor will veto the bill. Consider
able pressure is being brought to
bear on Mr. Sprague by the tobac
co manufacturers to do just that.

Sixteen head of cattle, sets of
harness and other articles of farm
equipment were destroyed when
fire of unknown origin consumed
the large barn on the George Ed
wards farm on upper Floras creek,
Monday, March 10, according to
information brought to Bandon
later in the week by a neighbor
ing farmer.
In the late afternoon Edwards
returned to the farm with a truck-
load of baled hay for his cattle.
The hay was unloaded at the barn
and Edwards went to the house for
supper. It was while he was eat
ing supper that the fire was dis
covered, but the entire barn is said
to have been aflame and the cat
tle could not be reached.
The Edwards farm was formerly
known as the old Gallier place,
having been the home of one of
Bandon’s pioneer families.
