Up H togtse S tiv e r « Once more I w ill try to drop you a line from the upper river. I have not w ritten since “ Sub scriber” perpetrated that broadside against me. I did not at the time think proper to reply; but ho miss ed it as bad as I did. We are sorry to have lost a good neighbor. Mr. A. M. G illespie has gone to E llensburg to school his children. Mr. Thomas Sm ith has gone : p the river, John McCoy went out the other m orning and soon espying two large bucks, shot aud crippled one when the two fell to lighting eachother. Presently tho bellig erent brutes eaught sight of Mr. NeCoy and made for him. lie lit out and shot at his pursuers as ho ran. R eturning to tho scene af terw ards he found he had killed one of them —a large “ live p o in te r.” We are about to lose our school d istrict up tho river. W ell, there has occurred anoth er birth since Subscriber sent his last note. *** , , . .... ■ A V u l u n b l c .T in y . The Weekly Exam iner of Oct. 27th, is worth the price of sub- f •riptitjn f o r a whole year. The front page is almost wholly occu pied with a railroad map showing the lines on the Pacific Coast in operation and those projected, tho whole constituting a b ird ’s-eye view of the great railroad sys- lems in their relations to this side of tho Continent. This map is posted up in our office for refer ence, and for tho inspection of any who wish to see nt a glance the railroad possibilities of this < ,’oast. - -------- On A I a r n tio ii. The Ju n io r took his departure from this place, Friday of last week, the season of his annual va cation being present. Ho will take in the Bay country in his travels, and if he should forget which one of the Ju n io rs he is, we hope some one will “ do” him ap with care and return him at our risk and expense. e f H a t t e r tit C u r r y C o u n ty . Wo sometime since sent out requests for statements of the b u tter product of the several dai ries in this county, and have pe rceived reports from threo in tho N orth end of tho couniy so far. Chris Long milked 64 cows and packed for shipm ent 1)300 pounds of butter. Mr. A. II. T h rift milked 10 cows with a product of 5000 pounds, and M essrs Langlois Bros, milked fifty cows aud made 4500 pounds of butter. A total for the three dairies reporting, of 10,000 pounds. The dairy season in this county is short, the m ilking ceas ing when tho weather sets in bad. I t is the intention of many of our dairym en to provide conveniences for longer seasons of milking, when the aggregate product of b u tter will be greatly enliancod. Mr. T h rift contem plates doubling tho capacity and product of his dairy another season. No report from Messrs. W ells, H ughes and McKenzie. Mr. Hughes is devot ing his principal attention to line stock raising, and to the enlarge- meut of his pastures to increase his posabilfties in that industry. O ur townsman Mr. Jensen, has made something of a showing in tho b u tter line this year. We hope* to be able soon to state the product of tho several extensive dairies so u th of P o rt Orford. A M raw . Tho P ortland papers adopt all sorts of means, by th eir silence concerning things cred itable to P o rt O rford, and giving undue prominence to any fact or circumstance which, in their eag erness to disparage the place, they can torture into something they fondly hope will tend that way. A poorly disguised effort in this line and to this end is witnessed in the purpose of those sheets to locate H unter’s Point at Port O I rford, and then parado tho item glqppicd from T he P ost that a part of the crew of the “ Mary D. H um e” were swamped in attem p t ing to make tho shore, and that tho vessel d ^ o not „attem pt to come in. Before raid papers at tem pt another fraud of the sort, their editors willdo well to give a little attention to local geogra phy. H u n ter’s Point is below the m outh of Rogue river, and is between 30 and 40 miles South of Port O rlord. I S a ilN t o r in . This place was visited on Tues day with a protracted hailstorm , preceeded by quite heavy thunder. The ice missiles which fairly ra in ed down for several m inutes were of very uniform size—say about as large as common peas. C o q u ille F is h e r ie s , On the opening of the fishing season on the Coquille river says the News, we gave to e names of the parties engaged in rue b u si ness and an estim ate of the num ber of barrels which would proba bly bo pu t up. Now that tho sea son is about closed wo lhfd that tho num ber of barrels actually p u t up will fall a little short of reaching our estimate. This is owing to tho fact that it was impos sible to get help to care for the fish and when a certain number were caught, d u rin g the day or night, thi> fisherman h aiH o return to the salting house, several boats catching, at tim es, th e i' allowed num ber in two hours with drift nets. Coos and C urry counties, occu pying a stretch of country from the C alijoruia lino up the Coast to the N orthw ard for a distaneo of 150 miles, and shut off from the interior by the Coast Rango, have, heretofore, been treated by the balance of Oregon as of no p racti cal ..importance —a sort of atfcjr- thought which the Almighty is thought to have done odd jobs on for want of betterem ploym cut after comploteing what ho deemed sufficient for the future glory of the grand, incomparable Common wealth of Oregon.
