A n ti-M o n o p o ly . The Oregon V idett heretofore a literary monthly is now issued weekly with the adjunct title, /Vnti-Monopolist. The V idett in its new character deals vigorous blows against the system of half legalized piracy which perm its the confiscation of the earnings of tho m illions by and in the interest of the more thousands. Lot us hope that the anti-monopoly war-cry will not cease until tne toiling m il lions of the land shall have justice in some sort dealt out to them. If true to themselves the people have it in their power to extort tlieir ju st demands. To succeed in tlieir anti-monopoly fight they must be vigilant, circum spect and 'determined. Tho oue danger of all others which [will beset them, will be found in tho facility with which a class of characterless brokers in partisan opportunities will insinuate themselves into the favor of the new organization. Shun them! Spit upon their pre tensions. Once in a position to betray you, they will sell you out as cold-bloodedly and cruelly as th - Mammons of M onopoly now rob you. E ditor P ost .—Of all the laws, mysteriously and insidiously de signed, our present statute, in re lation to sheep, is the most odious ¡and tyranical. The famous 7x8 lawyers of the Electoral Conimis- ' sion could not juggle up one by incantation more favorable to law yers ami destructive to clients. Tho necessity of a law to prevent tho spread of disease among cither beasts or men, is imperative; but this law invades the rights of property, as well as tho rights of man, by giving tho Inspector a power to enter our enclosures, drive our sheep, and otherwise control them .; while tho insignifi cant owner, m ust stand with his hands in his pockets, in an attitude of groat ■ expectancy, p ith eyes awonder and month agape, most humbly awaiting Boss Shepherd's diagnosis, aud mutely reoeives the sublime pronunciation.! If the people of Eastern Oregon want such a law, let them have it; bu t lot them have ^ill of it! Our county, itud the valley eounties, where sheep are kept w ithin en closures, have no need of it. Our people hoped that no one would accept tho position of Inspector. “ C ontra.” Shakespeare has some thing to say about, - “ Ciad in a little brief authority:” and our old friend Kelsay, by the by, used to say, th a t,—“ Tho fee is the eseense of the ease.” Tf this law is to remain on the statute book of Oregon, I, for one, am not willing that, tho sheep- growing Interests shall, alone, be protected by guardian (?) power. This savors too much of “ class legislation,” ami looks like a greedi ness for mutton. Let us reduce mutton to par by having a guardi an appointed to inspect, order, drive and control, all other busi ness interests. In tho m ultitudi nous exigencies that would arise, wo would all become Inspectors, and thus create a political m illen nium. WE HAD A CASE Inspector qualified, went and ex amined tho sheep, found them sound, b u t would not issue a per mit, as the sheep had come out of a hand that w as slightly diseased. Thus you can see some of tho com- plications and annoyances that can arise from the attempted execu tion of this law they aro enough to make a preacher swear, and give a lawyer religion. At least, so 1 thought, when I saw our 250 pound advocate wearing a “ smile that was childlike and bland.” Out of this case one man is now bound over for ail assault w ith a deadly w’eapon. Three mon forci bly accomplishing an unlawful purpose may make a case of rio t— the three being singly or collect ively liable to a suit for damages; another suit can grow out of tho injunction; while the Inspector is also liable for witholding a perm it which it was plainly his duty to give, if the sheep were sound. Under this law we have no right to drive sheep to market, or from one part of Uncle Sam's domain to another, w ithout our G uardian’s Perm it. Whoever buys my friend Wilson’s bunks will have no right to remove them without a permit — except by successful smuggling. I know of no other law that leaves us so much to the tender mercies of our enemies, or so com pletely Shylockeil. Three dollars a day and mileage, on the word of onr enemy, for a c-sheep medical call 69 mill's away, on ten patients worth $1 25 apiece! If not pulled over our eyes, it’s enough to make us believe we’ve got wool in our teeth—hah a-a! H ardy T hurston . A Japanese genius has succeeded in making rifles of silk. They are as “ rigid as iron guns w hile they are easy of carriage and have a very long range." Blank deeds at this office. BORN. At Cape Blanco, T hui rduy, Novi-iuhu • 3d, ISKt, to tiie wife J a s .
