An incident of the race Saturday a week ago at Roseburg between "H onest Jo h n ” and “ Silver T ail,” is worth recording. Wo have the facts from the lips of a gen tlemen who was present on the oc casion. A syndicate of gamblers put up heavily on “ H onest Jo h n ,’ yet they were a trifle apprehen sive of the outcome of the race. The lad who was to ride “ Silver Tail” was “ approached,” and p re sented with a two hundred dollar watch t o “ throw ”tlie race. He took the “ swag,” bu t “ blowed” on the bribers. This was perplexing as well as galling, so, an effort was made to recover back the watch, which failed through the pluck of the rider, who kept his assailant at bay with a drawn pistol. B ut the chagrin of tho crowd only reached its climax when, in spite of the best efforts of the bribed boy to provent it, “ H onest Jo h n ” won tho race with tho greatest ease. They had belittled them selves, compromised tho “ fraterni ty ,” and lost a watch to secure a result which was foregone and u n avoidable. Though they won their stakes on the race, they could not, upon a survey of the whole field, feel happy. Their w innings were, in the light of all tho surroundings, dearly bought. ( ' m i g h t ( l i e ICaM cul. Not a few residents of this vici nity will rem em ber the presence hero for a short time, of a dingy, dirty, sneaking, specimen of the genus homo with an old yellow horse and tho fag-ends of what had, du rin g the ages past, answer ed to roll-call as a saddle, as his only visible companions. The follow adopted tho alias of “ Joe M organ,” here, and claimed to have three medical “ derplom as/ from New York. He pretended to want work, b u t Joe Bond could get none out of him and so bouuoed him . He then applied to us for a job cu ttin g brush. We p u t him to work, but he was not long im provising an excuse to “ go and see a man who owed him five dol lars.” We made no objections to his going for we had, during two short hours of the forenoon he was with us, discovered his u t ter worthlessness, as to cutting brush. He started away, going to the house which contained no oc cupant for the moment, and help ed him self to such article» as he could conveniently hide, ami then took his departure. This wna the last we heard of the coon until our correspondent at Chetco disclosed the fact that he is in lim bo for stealing a watch and pistol from Assessor Schanck. He pin- oth in E llensburg jail for 30 days. K r lio o l lC v p o r t. NO. 11. ( O R ’ ï : ES PO N P E N C E . P e r s o n a l. AI. M.
