A t 9:30 o’clock this morning, af­ ter the President had arrived at the Baltim ore and Potomac depot with his party waiting to take the train for Long Branch he was shot twice by a man within two feet of him. The President’s friends rushed to him as ho loll and Blaine called for Rockwell. 'Pho Station Agent Carney arrested the assassin who said, “ I «lid it; 1 am salwart, and A rthur is now President, 'fake the letter I have hereto Gen­ eral Sherman, and he will tell you all about it.” 'l hc President was shot twice, one ball entered from the rear to one side and is believed to have passed through the kid­ neys.
