The melancholy news of the sad death of Mr. Samuel Lake,of Cliet- co, b rother of W ill Lake, mail car rier on P o rt Orford-Bandon route, reached this place after T he P ost was p u t to press last week. The correspondent of tlio Crescent City C ourier gives the following account of the sad affair: “ In Chetco vally on Friday even ing occurred a most distressing and fatal accident by which Mr. Sam uel Lake lost his life. He was en gaged in hauling lum ber for Mr. Blake of th at locality. Upon a r riving in front of his own reside nee with a load on the way to its des tination, he stopped the team and ran into the house, obtained a piece of bread and b u tter, kissed his wife and starting again for the wagon, discovered the team moving off on a down grade. Quickening his pace to a run, he came up w ith, and was seen in the a ct of sp rin g ing from the elevated road-side on the wagon, ju sta s it was disappear ing down the hill. H is alarmed wife ran to the spot and to ile r h o r ror found him lying motionless on the ground,on the opposite side of the road, while the team went Hying away at full speed. H er heart-piercing cries b ro u g h t speedy assistance from near neigh bors, b u t all efforts to resucítate the injured man were w ithout avail, and in a few m inutes he breathed his last, w ithout uttering a word. I t is supposed th at in springing on the wagon from the roadside the motion of the wagon being greater than th a to f his own, he lost his eq u ilib riu m and went headlong over, striking the ground with his head, thus dislocating his neck. W hen assured of his death the grief of his newly-crazed young wife (they had been m arried but a few months) was heart-rending in the extreme, and the sad scene will never be effaced from the memory of those who witnessed it.” U . The farmers are all busy harvesting their crops, which arc yielding bountifully, as usual crops have never failed us yet. The dairymen are jubilant over the demand for b u tter; there will be shipped from this place during the season about ten tons of the latter article, which, at present ¡»rices, will not bring less than five thousand dollars; add To this the beef, potk.ctc., which is annu ally turned off of every dairy farm and it will make a neat little show ing. At present, an average cow will give from seven to ten gallons of milk per day, from which can be made three fourths to one pound and a half of butter. There is no part o f Oregon or California where dairying can be »¡tr«!»-' • .»•- successfully than hero, owing to the pure water and greenness of the grass the season through.
