VOL. I. TOW N A M ) PORT ORFORD, OREGON: THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, ISSO. COUNTY. T h e A v e r y T r a il. The above thoroughfare is of the first importance, not alone to the large number of industrious settlers at its term inus and along its course, but to the business of Port Orford as well. This trail was located by order of the County Court, in pursuance of the “ trail law ” of Oregon, and has been opened from Newcastle this way tor a considerable distance, while the route selected puts it upon bet ter ground than that occupied by the old trail and very m aterially shortens the distance traveled be tween Newcastle and this place. Some work has been done on this end, starting out from a point near Deputy Sheriff U nican’s place. We understand th at many b u si ness men and others about P ort Orford are ready to contribute toward the completion of the en terprise, and certainly it will be to the interest of all of us to per- . severe in the m atter, until a good, practicable highway connects us with the very outposts of the in habited country lying east of here. "W e would suggest in this connec tion that contributions be placed in the hands of Mr. Coldwell or some other reliable person, and let him hire labor by the m onth, and have the supervision of the expenditure of all funds so ad vanced. By all means let the peo ple at this end evince a sp irit of liberality in a m atter of so much importance to all. And w hatever is done should be gone about speedily. S chool Itcp o rt.
