The Oregonian studiously re­
frains from disclosing the whole
tru th with respect to the recom­
mendation of the Board of E ngin­
eers as to the am ount necessary to
be appropriated to make the Port
Orford H arbor answer the needs of
commerce for many years to come.
The eight m illions necessary to
complete the improvement is dwelt
upon with pertinacity, while the
fact remains that the Commission
deemed half the am ount ample to
make a H arbor which would
subserve the present needs of com­
merce. A fifteen hundred foot
wall would, it is said, be sufficient.

Umpqua valley, and it now only
remains to construct a line of rail­
road connecting P o rt Orford and

were somewhat disappointed when
we heard that you had concluded
to commence business at P o rt O r­
ford, b u t when we received the
news of the location of the break­
water at our sister town we, with
one voice, excused you. We are
a reasonable people, and know it
to bo to your interest to locate at
that point, as its immediate outlook
is good. We feel that your paper
will bean acquisition to our county.
