MODERN WOODMEN WILL
WM. SMITH SHOT IN
CELEBRATE JULY 4
LIQUOR RAID
The celebration of July 4th la now
assured. The local camp of the Mod
ern Woodmen of America have taken
th« responsibility of the celebration
and at present are busy laying plans
to hold one of the bent celebrations
that Dayton has aver seen.
The local camp will meet next 'fues
day evening and the big order of busi
ness will be the selection of various
Committees to make July 4. a grand
success. The City Council gave the
Woodmen permission to use the city
park for thia occaaion Monday night
and the Wcxximon are very anxious
to get started in the laying of their
plana. Each member is so enthusiast
that such a thing as failure has not
been thought of,
There has been considerable talk
of making the fun last for two days,
but definite plana will not be made
public until after their meeting Tues
day evening. From the manner In
which the Woodmen have already
taken hold of the task before them
and the large Hat of attractiona that
they have been thinking of bringing
to town, it will bo a very largo day
of sports.
William Smith, who was shot in a
liquor raid Friday night at Chehalen
Valley, is in a very bad condition.
He is still paralysed from the hips
down. One of tile attending physic
ians thinks he may recover, while the
other says there are no chancea. An
'opration was performed by Dr. Mann
ing and Dr. Reitzel. Some of the
pressure on the spinal cord was re
moved and several bones were taken
out. Dr. Ong of Portland, who ap
parently has been the family doctor,
was present. Immediately after the
operaton, the patient moved his left
leg slightly, but as yet, hasn't been
able to move the right one.
A large still wa stakes at the time
of the raid.
