Calumet. Better Known as
“Pipe of Peace."

The peace pipe was about two and
a half feet long, the bowl was made
of highly polished red marble, and a
stem of a reed, which was decorated
with eagles' quills, women's hair, etc.
Legend has It that the Great Spirit
at an ancient period called the Indian
nations together, and standing on the
precipice of the red pipestone rock,
broke off a piece which he moulded in­
to the bowl of a pipe, and fitting It on
a long reed, filled the pipe with the
bark of red willow, and smoked over
them, turning to the four winds, lie
told them the red color of the pipe
represented their flesh, and when they
smoked It they must bury their war
clubs and scalping knives. At the last
whiff the Great Spirit disappeared.
To present the calumet (peace pipe)
to a stranger was a mark of hospi­
tality and good will; to refuse to offer
it was an act of hostile defiance.
Machine« Met Opposition.
Like all other great inventors, Ellas
Howe found that when he had com­
pleted the sewing machine his diffi­
culties had but begun. After he bad
brought the machine to the point of
making a few stitches, he went to
Boston to get a tailor to come to Cam­
bridge and arrange some cloth for
sewing, and give his opinion as to
the quality of work done by the ma­
chine.
The comrades of the man to whom
he first applied dissuaded him from
going, alleging that a sewing machine.
If it worked well, must necessarily
reduce the whole fraternity of tailors
to beggary. And tlJ* proved to be
the unchangeable conviction of tailor«
for the next ten years.
It Is probable that the machine«
first made would have been destroyed
by violence but for another fixed opin­
ion of the tailors, that the machine
would not really answer the purpose
for which it was Intended.
Collecting Cobwebs.
One of the most Interests and
most novel pastimes is the collecting
of cobwebs.
Each kind of spider spins its web
in a different manner, and specimens
can easily be secured and preserved
in their natural shape. To do this
you need an atomizer such as is com­
monly used for spraying.
Fill the
reservoir with artist's shellac, and se­
lect a well-formed web from which th«
rain or dew has dried away.
Then go over every part of the web
with the atomizer, so that it Is well
coated with the shellac. When you
have done this, obtain a piece of pol­
ished glass about the same size as th«
web. Before the shellac has time to
dry press the glass against the web
so that every strand sticks.
With ordinary care webs treated la
this manner will keep indefinitely. The
web« are best seen when a piece of
dark material Is placed behind th«
