States Department of Agriculture and the National Safety council show that every year hundreds of people are maimed and killed in farm accidents, a large part of which are preventable. “I don’t know where some fanners find economy in keeping ft horse that will shy at anything and kick any body who comes near him. Perhaps they like to feel their mastery, but the horse usually gets his inning in the end. And of course there is danger to inexperienced persons. “No bull above two years old should be permitted in a pasture, even if de horned, as all bulls should be. Even an ugly ram has been known to kill a man. Savage dogs ought not to be necessary on a farm. But you find them, and often they find you first. “Farm machinery, such as corn shredders, take a toll of limbs that would be prevented to a large degree If the most ordinary safety devices were Installed and kept in working order. Making Thrashing Safe. “In some states the boiler inspection laws do not apply to steam thrashers. Every thrashing machine owner ought to have his boiler inspected once a year, whether there Is a legal require ment or not. “I could talk for another hour or so on farm accident breeders that might be eradicated. A country doctor's practice is full of them; but here we are at the house. Come in to dinner before you go back.” “Much oblig d,” returned Brown, as he cramped his flivver around la the roadway. "I guess I’ll hurry back to the farm and fix up a few things be fore the neighbors have to get up a *be»’ to tide me over a broken leg.” When heavy snows split down large limbs on valuable orchard trees, most of the clean splits can be repaired by bolting, but where the break is badly splintered and shattered it is necessary to remove the entire limb. In repairing a limb which has split down and Is still clinging to the main branch, it is first lifted back into posi tion. This is done by roping the down limb to a secure branch higher up. For heavy limbs a block and tackle is employed to bring the limb back in to normal position. Then bolts are placed through the break to hold the limb securely in position. A bolt Is usually put through near the upper aud lower part of the break and with long splits one or more bolts are placed in the center part of the break. Wrapping the limb back wittf wire would cause a girdle that would In time weaken or kill the limb. It is not necessary to prune buck the down limb after bolting. Usually proper bolting makes the limb stronger than ever before. CLOSE PRUNING FOR PEACHES True National Glory.
