Practically the entire day was devotsd
to consideration of the anti-pass amend

so many exceptions as to arouse laugh

Washington, Mqy 16. — The uaval
appropriation bill, carrying nearly
*100,000,000, was completed today in
the bouse after one of the busieet days
of the present congress.
The vfeature
of the day’s debate grew out of the at
tempt to defeat the appropriation for
the largest battleship of ite clais in the
world and the tenor of the speecbee for
the big .hip was that the Amaxican re
public must be abreast of the nation*
of the world in the strength of her
navy. The opponent* talked fpr peace,
disarmament ana arbitration, and in
sisted that there wa* no national need
for such a large navy. The amend
ment introduced by Burton, of Ohio,
to strike out the appropriation for a
rival to the British Dreadnaught was
defeated, as wa* the amendment leav

A final vote on the bill will be taken

Will Oppose Big Battleship.
Washington, May 22.—The naval
program providing fpi ir the construction
of one great baltleslfip of tonnage equal
to any afloat or tow building will meet
opposition in the Senate, but not of
■ ich stubborn character, it is thought,
as to endanger its passage.
Several
members of the senate committee on
naval affairs have expressed themselves
as opposed to the building ot “the
great unwieldy type of the Dread-
naught,” now being constructed for the
navy of Great Britain and which the
house favors.
