Just as eoon as ths asndiog ksy is nleased, the waves cease to go out, and the impuloeo actuating the re ceiving apparatus are in accord with thorn of the sending station, it having been found that the veloo- 4ty of these waves in air is the o»me as that of light—186,000 miles a second. Thus, as soon as tbs do- ths influence on the microphone ceases, the carbon particles deoo- here, and the normal high resistance is restored. It is therefore evident that as dote and dashes are made by the transmitting apparatus the microphone coheres aud decoheres in unison with it, the result being that the rignala are received in the telephone receiver as a series of clicks which ooiy require for intel ligent translation, the experienced ear of telegraph operator.—John F. Tineley in Sunset Magaxine for April. There is a modern tendency to wink at vice. Youth for pleasure, age for businees, and old age for re ligion, is the abominable adage we frequently bear. «The lusts of the flesh are regarded as mere juvenile indiscretions, youthful follies, which mature eg» writ correct. Sobriety*, morality, religion will all oome in ‘ due time. The wrecks that straw life’s seashore are too common for experience to give much credence to that idea. Without doubt the hor- ror of this world is that vice which rears its monuments in graveyards, hospitals, garrets, cellars, impaired minds and polluted hearts. Men, and even women regard thia viee lightly. Fashionable and moral society places no ban on thio horror. The guilty and polluted wretch mixes with the purest in the land, and is assured of a glad welcome. Tbs rake gnd the debatlohee can de fy all justice but that of heaven. So long as virtuous women are will ing to receive moral outcasts as their companions and friends, men will f;e t worse, i n • toad of better. It res to argely with the young womsn of this country if society is to be raised bht of this swamp if sensuality to the secure heights of virtue, where God’s sun shines, and God’s breezes blow, and all life io beautiful.—Al bert E.
