A t any rate, this was the case recently when the Chambre des Requetea had to consider an ac tion from Toulouse. Some time back a solicitor living In the neighborhood of that town, engaged the services of a local matrimonial agent, 'who. In due course found a suitable wife for bis client The marriage took place and the agent applied for his Commis sion, but the solicitor did not appear Inclined, to pay the sum agreed upon. He first declared that the amount was out of proportion with the services rendered, and subsequently refused to pay anything whatever, says the Parts Messenger. The parties then went to law, and the local civil court dismissed the agents’ claim on questions of fact. H e appealed, and the Appeal Court also decided against him, holding that “money payments for matrimonial ne gotiations were Immoral and Illegal.'* The plaintiff next appealed on a point of law to the Chambre des Requetea, which decided In his favor and ordered a fresh trial of the action by the Civil Court. A passage In the speech made by the Advocate General Is well worth quoting. A fte r showing that marriage had always £$en con sidered as the basis of society, he said: “H ow can the fact of facilitating a marriage, of placing two families In relationship, of procuring a companion for the man who wishes to create a fam ily be declared a priori. Ipso facto, an act contrary to morals, to law and to public order! The contrary Is the case. A priori and on principle. It Is a meritorious action, and it cannot be considered too favorably. Must the nature of this meritorious and moral action be changed because the Inter mediary has not been a- disinterested person? By no means. A disinter ested Intermediary may commit a de testable action, while an interested one may commit an excellent one. Every thing depends on the circumstances." “ Jsysmith fairly worships his wife,” said Foedlck, “ and yet be won’t give her enough money to drees herself prop e rly .” “ I t isn’t always the most devont wor shipper that puts the most money on the collection piste,” replied Keed- ick.— Town Topics. « Mother (loose. “ Mother Goose,” who is probably mors fam iliar to children than any ether personage in story books, was a real person.
