the Oregqn Statesman office, Salem,

quake shook was felt at that place,

On Mondey tbe steamer Bonita
I attempted to run np ovor the dam
’ at tbe Yam hill locks, the water be­
ing too high to pass through the
locks. When about half way over
the large rope by which the boat
- was being lined up broke, the cur­
rent being too strong for the rope to
hold the boat.
When the rope
broke the boat swung around and
the bow eaught on tiro wall of the
locks and bong fast. I t w^s some
* little time before the boat got free.
It then steamed back to Dayton
and lay over night
