0, this unseizable firefly grail
humming around me, like a dead man’s tale
where is the playground, with my starry night girl
what happened to my smiling words, spoken with a twirl?
Standing in a world, deigning to name itself Atlantis
I try to build a revolution, but I cannot man this.
I want my freedom, my buckshot lovekiss
honeymooning on an island, of margaritas and starfish.
So I shake my fist, walking down the backstreets
and I do my days, like a rug you stand outside and beat
praying to God, if he even still hears me
dressing by faith, from my head to my feet.
I want to wake up beside her, in the bohemian dawn
join the rebel alliance, of the common throng
hear the heaving workingman’s, and the wild bird’s song
in different variations, all eternity long.
My first newspaper sale I can vaguely recall
It was sometime in July of 2011, long ago
I forced myself to shake off the fear and self-loathing
Then making tips on top of the sale was so cool!
He said “I love Street Roots!” and gave me a smile
I knew from then on that Street Roots is more than a job
It’s an opportunity to meet nice buyers!
It’s a career as well, a stepping stone onto
Full recovery and being around people who give a shit
I would not change jobs for anything
Cause I can see in Street Roots I found a perfect fit

Praying until the daylight shines
A heart beating deep as the new day rises
The heat of the day unbearable to many
Though a paradise I see.
Many a man and lady see to my paradise
Though only the strong persist
