Shelters
Nowhere Run
by Eileen Vizenor
by Michone Nettles
Shelters? What comes to mind for you?
A lean-to for livestock? Domestic animals?
Firewood? Garage? Storage? A chicken coop?
Out of breath
Breathe deep before you sleep
Wake up and live
The day is before us
This day is all we have
Tomorrow is not promised.
Give thanks and praise to our Earth Mother
She supports life and death if you believe
Your life after death is on you!
Believe and you’ll be where you want to be
I am a believer, I believe in you,
And human nature that’s love at its purest form.
What a shelter means to this chick,
is a safe place. A place that has
a bed or a mat for someone in need.
A daily shower. A daily meal.
Daily compassion and empathy from its staff.
A place of rest, nutrition, and personal hygiene
for my service animal and self.
For now, a shelter is our home.
Stolen Dreams
by Daniel Cox
I stole this pen to write this poem,
it was the crime of the year.
With this pen I slumber long, I dream so vividly
It was winter time
and the dinosaur was dressed for it as he cross-country skied toward me,
Then I arose to write this poem
