Still Remains
by Preeti Yadav
by Maddy Brown-Clark
Life w ith o u t a soul,
T h e birds singing told m e
in e rt inhabitance in th is savage world
W hat to dream
E ven th e rum bling of th e E a rth
faded, obscure existence as if incidental,
As it quaked
Was m usic to m y e a rs
dw indled to a list o f d os and don’ts
indispensable to o u r survival.
T h e w ind rustlin g leaves
B u t h o p e rem ains,
O pen y our eyes!
Told of c hanges to com e
T h e roaring of th e sea
E ven if it m akes you cry.
Told how th e M oon
C ontrolled th e tides
T h e crackling sound of E a rth ’s
H ope holding on to hope,
w aiting patiently for you and m e,
w ishing we will one day w ake up
and try to be tru ly happy,
choose ourselves over o u r co m m itm ent to conformity.
Fire
Told how w e all are changed
F o r life is a fire.
S om etim es it m olds us.
H ope is betting on us
against all odds,
hoping w e have th e w isdom
to recognize th e divine in us,
appreciate th e beautiful colors w e a re m ade of.
S om etim es it destroys us.
B u t th e fire still rem ains
previously published in a Tillamook-area newspaper
Follow th e fragrance in o u r h e a rts
and finally do th a t w hich m akes u s tran sp ire
w ith glee, jum p up h ig h er and h ig h er
N ot standstill, le t o u r m inds ru n free
w h ere o u r w ishes m atu re and o u r d ream s grow tall
thro u g h expansive fields,
uninhibited and a t ease.
E n d u re th e wild fires
stirre d by th e en em ies of o u r dream s
until th e flow ers of p e rsiste n c e blossom
■ ■
until the offspring of our incubated visions
cocoons of h ope b u rs t open,
tu rn in g into beautiful b u tte rflie s
THE MAGIC IS IN THE HOLE!
T h en we m ay cea se to m erely endure
life of m undane, uninspiring chores
held by a th in string, hanging by a cord
U ncerem oniously pulled o u t of o u r lives,
2 2 , SW 3 R D
& B U R N S ID E
we m ay salvage o u r souls
T h e re is still hope
I think.
