Street Roots • March 4-10, 2016 Poetry Page 12 My views on feminism and reverse sexism by j.mccurdy Do something different It doesn’t make sense To assume it will be An instant easy Or a simple solve Forme It begins With the hands that change The diapers With the makeup That covers the black eye You cannot To beat a boy senseless Murder his childhood Can’t drench it In the scent of his mothers tears And then expect him To not bruise The skin Of the woman He calls his own... Because sure as shit We just taught him That that’s how it goes You can’t do that Any more then you can Expect a girl Whose value is reduced To how well She moves those hips To not use them In the quest to survive... Could be just me But I don’t believe There is reverse sexism Any more than I believe There is reverse racism. Fuck I think it’s far more Complicated And far more simple Than all that.. I believe It is the undoing of balance That first began to cause the Rift between the genders When the Earth went From being our mother To a possession... It has also became possible To profane the sacred After all How can you look at the Earth As a possession and our women As more than that.. The fate of the Earth Is intrinsically connected To that of our women So between that And intergenerational trauma This generation Don’t stand a chance Unless we It wounds men To wound women And women Disrespect themselves When they Disrespect men And while I’m at it Generalizations And the blanket Assumptions we all make About the other gender Ya Ain’t nobody comes out Of that right Cuz some of us are whole And some of us are healing But none of us Are the ones Who damaged you, When women went From being matriarchs To submission We lost the right To the results of How it’s supposed to be I think that Until we can approach each other Apart from our fear Away from wound There will never Be any such thing As equality Unless we all Work together To break Intergenerational trauma Unless we unlearn What bent and broken Taught us About who we are not There can not be Respect or Solidarity Between The genders So do not Come to me Fresh from the judging and recent injury To request an opinion on this subject...
