Homeless in Winter
by Maddy Brown-Clark
The chill of winter is
in the air.
People are sleeping on
the streets everywhere
How will they ever keep warm?
How will the women stay safe
from harm?
Will they get sick from the cold concrete?
Will they live only to die on the street?
Will someone lend a helping hand?
And realize that everyone’s part of the plan?
So the chill of winter is in the air
Give a damn people. Start to care.
The truth is
Words have more power
Than the whole of this world
When cascading past our senses
They at once turn
Good decisions bad
And bad ones gloriously good
It’s a known fact
That people change their
Entire lives around
A single conversation
Lives and histories change
Course, all over pretty ‘lil words
Spewing out the mouths
Of people who may or may not
Mean what they say
Echoes
So lemme bring you
Life’s lil lesson of the day
The heart is a better teacher
Than the brain ever was
Better to listen to it than the brain
And all its learned complications
Probably best to note
That that steady flow wo hope
Created by Words fickle ways
Is designed to distract you
From good old fashioned
Rock solid common sense....
Have you thought about where
The words begin?
Do they originate
From wound and fear?

Listen to the faces in the fire,
taunt them and feed them
all your unborn desires,
dance naked to the primal dreams
in the night.
There is never good cause
for true lovers to fight

Are they designed
To support
Or instill surrender to sensation
Now that I think about it
For sure and for certain
Words are powerful things
But they don’t till the soil
And they sure as shit
Don’t cause the sun to
Rise or set by themselves
They don’t pay the rent
They don’t take the steps
To create change by themselves
So really in the end
Without action or commitment
Words are only as powerful
As we let them become
