Street roots S e p t 12, 2014 Darkness by Kenneth T. Nickell It is always dark here. Grey stone covers the ground reflecting the blue haze of the moon. The eyes of red stars glint, and sparkle as though timidly looking upon the face of this long dead world. Slender twigs jut from the stone, a reminder of the once nourishing liquid that flowed gently across these rock river beds. Caverns that run along the feet of giant stone mountains are now the only refuge from the daybreak. A single blinding flash, like a flare in the sky, then darkness again prevails. All plants have become rejiant on the corpses that lay about, dissolving all but bone in their struggle to revive that once beautiful home of theirs. The carnivorous flora are the only food left for us. This is a place littered of death arid covered in blood. No homes or shelters exist except as tombs for those who built them so long before any can recall. 10 pools of the black syrup still remain. They swell and shriek with the passmg of our only light, the moon. The syrup can be used but not eaten or drank. Its only service: to fuel the beast that tills the ground tunneling for some shred of hope.
