♦ ♦ Street roots 15 April 12, 2013 Helen Hill is an artist, playwright and birth doula who lives in the Portland area. Several years ago she began this series of drawings when she was working on a variety of project with Dignity Village. It was an eye-opening experience, one that helped her see people experiencing homelessness as individuals, which she has tried to capture with their portraits. “What strikes me the most is how many people try to pretend like street folks are invisible (the way I used to) as they pass them by. I started drawing these portraits to try to say: “these are worthy people, worthy of a word, a thought, a gesture, and we are all in this together”. All the people I drew, I hung out with and talked to for awhile, shared stories.
