Familiar faces, familiar cases
Portlanders joined demonstrators across the country on Wednesday, Feb. 29, to
protest the activities of the American Legislative Exchange Counsel, or ALEC. The
marchers targeted businesses in Portland that are members of ALEC,which is a massive
lobbying corporation that authors legislation for Congress.
About 1,000 marchers visited the offices of ExxonMobil, McDonalds, Blue Cross Blue
Shield, Verizon, FedEx, Taco Bell, Walgreens, Shell, Wells Fargo, and Bank of America.
The events have brought new attention to ALEC, which has gone largely unnoticed by
the general public. The organization boasts the creation of “model legislation” that is
used by corporations and promoted by lawmakers at both the federal and state level.
