Old Town/Chinatown
discuss homeless camp
with code enforcers
pproximately 70 people experiencing
homelessness continue to sleep out on
the corner of NW Fourth Avenue and
Burnside, prompting a special meeting of the
Old Town/Chinatown Neighborhood
Association liability committee on Oct 26.
The city’s Bureau of Development Services
(BDS) has sent a letter to the property owners
requesting a plan for the lot, and threatened
the owners with fines for possible code
violations. A spokesperson for the city’s BDS
told a crowd of nearly 100 people at the
meeting that the owners of the property had
responded saying they had given permission
to the group of homeless people to stay on
the lpt barring any illegal activity. The
spokesperson said they are moving forward on
the investigation and that if code violations are
found they could result in fines of up to
$1,000 a day if the owners do not comply.
Representatives from Right to Dream Too,
the neighborhood association and the Portland
Housing Bureau also spoke at the meeting
about coming up with both short-term and
long-term solutions to the location at NW 4th
and Burnside and the need for housing.

amily and music drew Bradley Siegle
to Portland seven years ago from his
hometown of Peoria, 111. He quickly
found a music scene that allowed him to
express his individuality, which was
preferable to some other cities he could
have settled in.
“I think about going to L.A. and things
like that,” says Bradley. “The difference is
success versus independence. Portland
really allows an artist to be independent, to
do what they want to do and I really like
that about i t ”

and I played bass in a band for a while,”
Bradley says.
The main goal Bradley has is not to get
rich and famous through music, though he
does appreciate th e feme that selling Street
Roots brings: “It’s weird to be on the
streets and have strangers come up and
know your name. I t s really profound.”
More than anything, he appréciâtes that
personal connection between himself and
his listeners. “My goals are self-motivated,”
Bradley says; “I don’t have a corporate
ideal... It would be nice if I got the
opportunity to play some shows or to put
some CDs out. It’s basically grassroots, ju st ,
someone possessing my CD and listening
to it is the goal. It’s very down to Earth. It’s
not about contacts or sales or anything like
that.” Then, he smiles, “If anyone wants to
hire me to play birthday parties I’m
available.”
Outside of music and Street Roots sales,
Bradley really enjoyswatcbing movies, i ‘
Some favorites are the “Twilight” trilogy
and “My Own Private Idaho,” Gus Van b
Sant’s look at the Portland Underground.
Bradley has also amassed a pretty afhazing
plethora of foreign coins from the return
slots of Portland parking m eters. His beSt
score thus far has been ten Francs.
Bradley’s favorite food is cheesecake and
his favorite drink is, appropriately,
Rockstar. He sells Street Roots Wednesday
through Monday from 8-2 at the Rite Aid in
the Pearl District^ NW 10th Ave and H oyt
