Shed Boy
By L.E. Neilson

Hifit
I’m living in the attic of an old woodshed
an 8 x 12 cracker-box palace
the size of a large closet
I have an extension cord
From a drug house
like a long orange snake climbing the wall.
.1 have no toilet, I piss in the bushes.
I have no shower, I bathe in the river.
I have a mattress on the floor with a sleeping bag.
I am within walking distance of a library
and the beer shops.
I have rats in the walls
and it’s a Mexican standoff between me
and the ants
Some days, they seem to be winning.
Yesterday I ate tuna fish right out of the can
with pepper
today it will be crackers and peanut butter
and a stolen apple.
I kill two stones with one bird.
Beautiful women come to see me some days
and on the days they don’t, I write poems.
The neighbors think I’m crazy,
wishing I did not exist
I play the Beatles and drink wine
settle into a comfortable poverty,
Another successful American poet.
