Faithful readers will remember a story from this spring, when your beloved reverend was drafted by Ol' Joe Keating to help support a tree sit down on the Acey Line near the Tillamook/Clatsop border. Yep, the community came together and we done good, we got ODF to postpone the thin and come to the table and talk. We talked all summer but no one listened. August 1st the chainsaws started and the press releases went out from ODF, in that order. The last "Focus Ciroup" meeting was the Thursday before, and everyone there was told by ODF that as soon as the other groups in Astoria and Forest Grove finished we would know what was going to happen and when. Apparently the local Sheriffs knew already, because there were officers surrounding the cut when it started. And Christian Futures must have known where they where working and when. The only people who didn't know when the cut would start was, well, everybody else. We first heard about it on KMUN when Mike McCusker announced it on his show Thursday morning August 2nd. They had been "thinning" for a whole day! The only thing that brought us out of the shock from the news was that the phone started ringing, immediately. People were calling to ask what they could do? Was it true? Where could they go to help stop this? The Sheriffs from Clatsop and Tillamook Counties were camped out and not allowing anyone within a mile of the cut. For the first time in history ODF had put a 600ft no access zone around an operation. They expressed shock that people didn’t believe them when they said they were enhancing habitat, "this is like motherhood and apple pie." They might think that phrase is a sure thing in America. But, it’s not. To some of us motherhood and apple pie brings an image of a pregnant woman chained to a stove. Sorry, it doesn't work that way any more. And managing a forest with the intent of speeding up the natural cycles of growth to produce a crop quicker doesn't work either. And using the story about enhancing habitat for a species that well might go extinct before the new habitat is ready doesn't work at all, even using ODF numbers. No, we think this is about power and money. But never mind, because it is a done deed. And the ugly thing is how it was done. How can the average citizen respect or obey authorities that lie to them . Haven't we learned that, " It's not nice to mess with Mother Nature", even if we think we are 'experts' and know how she works" Oh, children. AM TIDES IITETVPE Christian Futures has put $400,000 into the budget of the ODF and 'thinned' a new habitat for spotted owls and murellets they say. But in the meantime they have upset a whole bunch of folks, who arc members of the community, who don't usually break the law, who teach our children, who build our houses, who serve our coffee. ODF has activated a whole new batch of "Eco-terronsts". Yes, some of them are in their seventies, some are barely in school, but they live around the place that was 'thinned' and they did everything they could to work within the system and were lied to and treated with arrogance. It seems your beloved editor has been elevated to the ranks of Eco-terrorists himself by the ODF, as we found out when we called and asked to be included in the media tour that was designed to show off the 'good' job that ODF was doing. The PR person we talked to said that there was limited space in the crummies that would take the media to the 'thin' and that if the Upper Left Edge was to be allowed to participate we had to promise not to "do anything" while we were there. Well, we promised to be on our best behavior, and made up some new press credentials for Dean Bonde and Cheryl Rorabeck-Silar, because she had a camera and is the most knowledgeable about the area and Dean was our ride. When we got to the ajJpointed meeting place the ODF PR guy confronted us and seemed to want to deny us entry because of our previous articles. He finally said that he would allow only one representative from the Edge to participate. We explained that Cheryl was our cameraperson and we didn't know how to operate her camera, and besides the other media were allowed both a reporter and a cameraperson. We stood our ground and since the TV boys had turned on their cameras he backed off a little and said he would check. He went back to his truck and called someone. He came back and said Cheryl could come. He then explained that we would be driving our own rigs to the site, so much for the 'no room in the crummies' excuses. We then had to explain that Dean was our driver so he would have to go too. This seemed to upset him, but since Cheryl had gotten a nde from friends. Dean's was really our only rig. We finally decided not to push our luck and hopped into the back of Matt Love's pick up, leaving Dean to his own devices. Matt is a reporter for Hipfish and we heard that they weren't going to let him come because he had made unspecified "threats".
