R ev. Hulls Nader Notes Editorial Now & Then Reason, memory and imagination. When Thomas Jefferson decided to organize his library he, typically, chose the sim plest way. The lowest com m on denominator. The human brain has been divided into the same three sections by som e folks. It is difficult to argue with Mr. Jefferson’s decision. W e can find no book that does not fit into one section. History is memory; well it depends on who writes it. Fiction and the arts are imagination, and everything else; Cookbooks? Self-help? The Bible? Philosophy? .... W ell, an argument could be made for imagination, but reason seem s a more likely place to look in Mr. Jefferson's library. Jefferson's library was the foundation o f the Library o f Congress, and for many years they organized the books according to Jefferson's system . They eventually changed to the D ew ey Decimal System and have, o f late, invented and adopted the Library o f Congress System, according to St. Liz, who is in fact a librarian, and not a bad poker player. Once Jefferson had his books divided into the three categories he simply arranged them on the shelf by size. W e once arranged the Children’s section in the bookstore by color, but even that didn’t stay straight. Your Beloved Editor must print the Novem ber issue before the elections are over and is worried. Not just for him, but for the republic. When one reads Jefferson's words, which reflect his mind, one is humbled by the clarity. He writes no more or no less that is needed to express him self clearly to any one. There is no doubt in his words. He has thought about them. He has chosen them carefully. He expects them to be read with the same care. For example; “An intelligent officer, with ten or tw elve chosen men, fit for the enterprise and w illing to undertake it, taken from our posts where they may be spared without inconvenience, might explore the w hole line, even to the Western Ocean, have conferences with the natives on the subject o f commercial intercourse, get admission among them for our traders as others are admitted, agree on convenient deposits for and interchange o f articles, and return with the information required in the course o f two summers.” Those few words, that one sentence, written on January 18“ 1803 to the Senate and the H ouse o f Representatives, sent the Lewis and Clark Expedition on it’s merry way to this small village on the Oregon Coast. W e are told that politics is the art o f compromise. W e must be reasonable and give a little, if w e want to get along, w e have to go along. Thus Al Gore is the best choice w e have as far as som eone who could actually be elected. Our Democratic friends have made this argument more than once this year. A vote for Nader is a vote for Bush, they say. A s though they were adults trying to explain to a child that his only choices are Coke © or Pepsi © . Y es, they say, w e would all like to have something else, but the only choice w e have is Coke © or Pepsi © . Som e folks refuse to drink either concoction of sugar water and caffeine. W e believe that Ralph Nader is our best choice. W e believe he w ill not win. W e believe this is because the corporations that run our fair land, and own our government and control our media, forbid it. The easiest way to win a horse race is if you get to chose the horses. In the Presidential debates, which were sponsored by Budweiser © , w e were given tw o choices, just like the Bud Bow l © during the Super B ow l. Bud © or Busch Lite © in this case. That’s not democracy, that’s marketing. A bove the bar in B ill’s is a sign that says, “Y ou ’ve got to believe in something. I believe I’ll have another beer. ” M e, too. Reason says that people can figure out how to live together. N o, it isn’t easy. Memory says that we have tried this before and som e things worked better than others. Imagination says w e might be able to figure this out if w e try something new. Oaaara: J a ff k Gladys Womack 1238 8. Two cups sit empty now on the table. You have brought a basket of laundry to a chair beside the hpd where I lay. Something said has brought us closer tonight and we say nothing more. I am watching you fold the clean clothes. The floor glows golden next to your feet. There is no sound in the late night room. Before you finish I am sailing on a raft, adrift on the starlit sea of you-with-me. MU "MOON BABY” Hannv and Hurry Crcuver Nov. 4“ thru Nov 27* Cannon Beach Gallery 1064 S. Hemlock.
