By AJ Coyne
1 started planning a trip to Paris today, I should be
filled with excitement but 1 am not. I had some beautiful
moments I was going to share about the live jazz
performances I had the opportunity to see last month but
right now I can’t think of one nice thing to say. Dreadful
thoughts o f our worlds disarray have been running circles in
my mind all day. How do we make a difference in all the
ugliness? When I was younger my brilliant idea was to not
have children, I didn’t want to bring another life into a
world that I saw going down hill fast. 1 f ig u r e d if everyone
stopped conceiving we would be out o f our misery in a
hundred years or so. It is almost scary now to think o f the
ideas that come out o f youthful angst. Now I am older and
still unsure of how to make a change, I tell m yself voting is
the way but in reality is my vote going to do anything? I
realize that there is beauty and wonder in the world and if
you have ever read my column you would know that to be
true but sometimes it is hard not to get frustrated and angry
at all the injustice.

When I was offered this column I thought it would be
a great place to try and make a difference. 1 have used
humor to get people to look at themselves and often gotten a
bit sentimental hoping to do the same thing. Now I am
angry and we all should be, I am not saying we should walk
around pissed at the world but isn’t it time to take a look at
ourselves, our community, our country and our world? We
can all do something to make it better. I have a friend who
volunteers her time to an organization that helps abused
children, she does this while also working three jobs seven
days a week. What are you doing? This paper is constantly
trying to bring a higher awareness to our readers, are you
listening? Voting is important but it is not nearly enough,
we need to look at the things that aren’t working and change
them. How is definitely the question hardest answered but
if you find something that you think needs changing grab
onto it and you will think o f something to help make it
better.

learning?"—Florence, S.C., Jan.

Welcome Brendan Douglas Doer!
Faith and Douglas welcomed their eight pound
three ounce boy child into the world in the
early hours of Sept. 25th according to
informed sources.
I still don’t know what I am going to do to make my
difference but 1 know 1 am mad enough that I will do
something. I hope you are too.
