The Women’s Crisis Center is holding a
series of free community education workshops April
3, 10, and 17 at Tillamook Bay Community College.
Each of the three 2-hour workshops is designed to
increase community awareness and knowledge of
issues relating to violence in the workplace, at
school and at home.
Workshops will be facilitated by the
W omen’s Crisis Center’s Community Education
Coordinator and will feature guest speakers from
state and grassroots social change organizations.
Jenny Brown, W CC’s Community Education
Coordinator, believes the free workshops are a good
way to “help empower parents, professionals and lay
people to interrupt oppression and practice non
violence within their own lives.”
Registration for the workshops can be done
by contacting Tillamook Bay Community College,
at (503) 842-8222, extension 0.
The W omen’s Crisis Center is a crisis
intervention and resource center whose purpose is to
assist women and children who are victims of social
violence. W CC’s mission is to eliminate the
conditions that cause and allow social violence to
exist; and to provide safety and empowerment to all
women and children who have experienced any
form of oppression or violence, or who perceive
themselves to be at risk.
Women Affected by HIV/AIDS will
Gather in Yachats, OR, in May 2000 at the
Women's Wisdom Educational and Healing
Retreat
This first-ever peer-based retreat for women
in Oregon and SW Washington is scheduled for
May 4th - 7th, 2000, at the Yachats Inn and is open
to all women affected by HIV throughout Oregon
and SW Washington. The educational workshops at
the retreat will cover a broad range of subjects,
including prevention education, care, treatment,
medication adherence, networking, grief and loss,
community building, and advocacy. This will be a
dynamic and powerful occasion for women.
Numerous professionals from throughout the state
will be volunteering their time and expertise. In
addition to medical, social service, mental health
professionals, and peer advocates, there will be a
number of healing arts practitioners donating their
time and skills to this event.
Karen Pancheau, program coordinator, has
stated, “The women whose lives are affected by this
disease face a multitude of challenges. One of the
biggest challenges is the stigma this disease carries.
Women need to have a venue to reach out, support
and educate each other. It is through this type of
community building that women develop the tools
and strength to continue to face their daily lives.”
Surrounded by the healing environment of
the Village of Yachats, this retreat will offer both
rural and urban women respite form the continuous
struggle of managing HIV disease. Massage
therapists, hair stylists, and women’s care providers
are encouraged to volunteer for this special event.
