Hults with the most money get the most speech, in Congress for example. But one vote is still one vote, and we all get one, at least here. And even if we don’t believe it, we the people are still in charge, even where there is no ballot; consumers can boycott, workers can strike, people can protest, and in today’s world we will all know about it. When some power junkie in Congress acts like an idiot we find out pretty quick these days. W hen some greed head multi-national tries a fast one, everyone knows. We just don’t do much about it, usually. We might bitch about it at the grocery store or the local tavern, some of us might send an e-mail or a letter to the editor or even a congress person, but we are busy, we have lives, so pretty soon something else comes up and we are off on a new crusade That is why I’ve been so delighted to hear about people from all over the planet coming to my old stomping grounds in Seattle, to stand up for the environment, and workers’ and human rights. Oh, I expect there to be some crazy true believers on both sides, agent provocateurs, and other idiots parading around the streets causing trouble for the people they are suppose to be supporting by their foolish and thoughtless behavior. But I was delighted to hear of a ‘dirty trick’ created by the folks challenging the W TO’s policies. It seems they created a ‘wrapper’ that they slipped over a few thousand of the Seattle Post Intelligencer’s daily offering, bearing headlines that told of Boeing’s plans to move to Indonesia, written by one Joe Hill, and other bogus reports written by the likes of Emma Goldman. The folks responsible simply paid fifty cents, opened a paper box, wrapped their ‘wrapper’ around the real paper, and left them for folks to read. Illegal? Yes. Effective? They not only got a lot of laughs from folks who got the joke, but they got coverage in the very paper they parodied. In fact some folks at the “P.I.” were impressed with the quality of the work. The parody mast head left off the ‘r’ so the paper was called “The Seattle Post Intelligence”. So, Wendy, don’t be afraid of the 'bogey men.’ It is our fear and ignorance that give them what little power they have. They, like us, are simply human beings stumbling along as best we can in a world we don’t really understand. The best thing we can do is try to help each other understand what little we each have learned separately. And laugh at those foolish enough to think of us as frightened fools. Much as we would rather not, we pretty much have to in the next few years work out some basic simple rules for corporate responsibility globally. It is essential to our well being as a planet. It will not be simple, it will not be quick, but doing the right thing never is. It seems obvious that a strong economy demands a healthy environment, and a free people. So, if the world economy is to prosper, it is incumbent on the people to see that the environment and the people also prosper, thus the trip to Seattle. (What I love about almost all really strange goings on is that inevitably there is something silly and telling about them in the words that are used to describe them; for example C R E E P, {the Committee to RE- Elect the President during Watergate} and WPPS, pronounced Whoops {Washington Public Power System’s huge nuclear power financial fiasco} Is it just me or does the fact that Seattle is called the Emerald City, and the World Trade Organization is pretty close to The Wizard of Oz, indicate silliness on a global scale? Editorial Now & Then Well, here we are, the last days of the years that have a 19 in front of them. (I refuse to get into the argument about when the century begins or ends, sorry, it’s the zeros that do it.) Last month I vowed to go to Seattle where the WTO will be meeting, and oh, my it did start some stuff. 1 got a call on the answering machine from someone called Wendy, who explained that, in case I didn’t know, the WTO is part o f the M asonic Vatican Hapsberg Rockefeller Rothchild Swiss Bank Twelve Cardinals Trilateral Commission Federal Reserve Bank Secret Deal Guys Club. Wendy even gave me the phone numbers of some of these guys. Wendy didn’t leave her own number. Hey, Wendy, I gave you my number, it’s on the paper, why didn’t you give me yours? Is it that you want to talk but not listen? Since you obviously read the last issue, I would suggest you read our little motto on our web site; www.upperleftedge.com, it says this paper is dedicated to the arts, the environment, and the encouragement of rational dialogue. Not monologue Especially not irrational monologue. Have you read any history? Just because your name was invented as a character’s name in a children’s book (Peter Pan) doesn’t mean you can’t grow up. Just because the Hapsbergs, Rockefellers, Vatican, Masons, et. al. are rich and powerful and yes, do get together on a regular basis and shuck and jive each other, it does not follow that they have it all figured out and we are but pawns in a centuries old international conspiracy. That is what is called ‘slave thinking’ or ‘victim mode’. It serves the same purpose as the ‘commies’ did for so long and so well. It gets folks all riled up about something other than what is really happening. Having grown up learning ‘duck and cover’ I don’t enjoy the feeling of being vulnerable to the forces of darkness or the ‘evil empire’, as it was so eloquently (if not diplomatically) stated by RR. Nor do I enjoy be treated like a fool. Hey, I watched Watergate come down. I’ve read the damned transcripts, it was a third rate burglary by fourth rate guys hired by the most powerful and wicked man in the world at the time, and they blew it; the country learned a very important lesson. The government isn’t very good at a lot of things. That holds true for corporations. They are not involved in a great master plan for a new world order, is spite of what their own PR would have you think. Have no doubt about it, in this country and around the world it is the people who are, for good or ill, whether they know it or not, the sovereign We are reminded of Wayne M orse’s reply to a reporter who was asking about his efforts to stop the Vietnam War. The reporter asked, “ But, isn’t it the President’s right to make foreign policy?” “No!” said Morse, “That is the right of the American people!” And more and more the people are begining to realize that. In the last few decades the people of the planet have become much more aware of each other. Through radio, movies, television, and now the world wide web, we have more information about ourselves and our planet than ever before. And when you look at the information available with an open mind, noting population pressures, extreme disparity in economic resources, and the ongoing destruction of natural resources, it becomes obvious that something must be done, or the consequences will be predictable and ugly. There is a global gold rush on for the remaining natural resources of the planet that will determine our future. Those resources belong to the people o f this planet and it is time the people explain that to our corporations and our governments. The only way that can be done successfully is within the framework of the democratic process, with freedom of speech and information, the ballot, and if necessary non-violent civil disobedience. Revolution in a free country comes through the law, not the gun. The W orld Trade Organization must stop meeting behind closed doors, it must welcome input from the people its resolutions will effect. We have been allowing the corporations to make our laws for too long. The Supreme Court ruled that money is speech, so those And now, as all good media must, we will address the Y2K problem. Well, we use Macs so there is no problem here But it would be foolish to think that things are not going to happen come New Years Eve. The possibilities are endless, some stupid, some scary. One that is scary is that this might be the last Upper Left Edge. Originally, when we started the paper we promised to publish for five years, and made a good faith effort to stop at that time. We were harassed, flattered, and shamed into continuing on, but we actually only promised to publish until the year 2000, because we had no idea if we would be able to publish after that date. This is the 103rd issue of the Upper Left Edge, eight years and seven months. We have only twice barely missed our deadline, we have fluctuated between twenty plus pages at our biggest to a single four page broadsheet, we have printed work by children in grade school and by retired people, we have made some folks laugh and made some folks mad, we have printed work by folks who are famous and folks who will be famous and by folks you will W A S H IN G T O N a O R E G O N C O A S T S 1 9 9 9 Corrected for P A C IF IC BEACHES LOW DECEMBER HIGH DECEMBER OATE DAT OOTS” GUIDE 1 Wed • 2 Thur » 3 Fn • 4 Sat • 5 SUN» 6 Mon • 7 Tues • 8 Wed . 9 Thur • 10 Fn • 11 Sat • 12 SUN • 13 Hon - 14 Tues • 15 Wed • 16 Thur • 17Fri • 18 Sat • 19 SUN • 20 Mon • 21 Tue • 22 Wed» 23 Thur» 24 Fri • 25 Sat • 26 SUN» 27 M o n » 28 Tues» 29 Wed» 30 Thur» 31 Fri • UM TIDES UTE TYPE AM TIME n 7:36 8:26 9:10 9:49 10:25 10:58 0:12 0:53 1:33 2:12 2:50 3:29 4:10 4:54 5:42 6:32 7:23 8:11 8:59 9:46 10:33 0:03 0:55 1:46 2:35 3:24 4:14 5:04 5:56 6:48 7:38 8.3 8.6 8.9 9.1 9.2 9.3 7.6 7.6 7.6 7.6 7.6 7.5 7.5 7.6 7.8 8.1 8.5 9.0 9.5 100 10.3 8.1 8.3 8.4 8.5 8.5 8.5 8.5 8.5 8.6 8.7 PM TIME 7:43 8:51 9:50 10:41 11:28 AM TIMI FT 6.9 7.0 7.2 7.4 7.5 1:00 1:58 2:51 3:38 4:22 5:02 5:41 619 6:56 7:32 8:10 8:51 9:37 10:33 11:39 1.1 1:54 2.2 1.5 2:57 1.6 1.8 3:51 0.9 2.0 4:38 0.3 2.3 5:19-0.1 2.6 5:58 -0.3 2.8 6:35 -0.4 3.1 7:09 -0.4 3.3 743-0.3 3.4 8:15-0.1 3.5 8:47 0.1 3.6 9:22 0.3 3.6 10:01 0.6 3.6 10:47 1.0 3.3 11:41 1.4 11:30 9.1 123)1 9.1 12:32 1:04 1:39 2:18 33)3 3:59 5:09 6:33 7:54 906 10:10 11:08 9.0 8.8 8.7 8.4 8.0 7.5 7.0 6.8 6.8 7.0 7.4 7.8 11:21 10.5 1209 12:59 1:50 2:43 3:40 4:44 5:56 7:12 8:24 P M FT.
