O ne m orning in M ay 1 noticed a chipm unk scurry
through the m any wall planters and pots on my deck.
I had ju st filled all the the containers with fresh soil
and new plants. Each m orning for about a week the
chipm unk continued the same activity. I later found a
pansy plant had been uprooted. W hen I dug into the
soil to replant it I found a handfull o f sunflow er
seeds.
M entioning this to my neighbors they said they had
w ondered w here a chipm unk had taken all the seed.
T hey said they had to keep refilling their birdfeeders
as a chipm unk kept stuffing its cheeks with all the
seeds then scam pering o ff to unknow n territory.

I d id n ’t find any m ore uprooted plants nor other
containers disturbed and only saw the chipm unk a few
m ore tim es, and thought he had only hidden a few
seeds. M uch to my surprise by the end o f June
sunflow er plants had sprouted in every single wall
planter and pot. I w eeded out a few o f the plants but
left som e to grow. T hrough the sum m er the bright
yellow sunflow ers added color with all the other
varieties o f annuals I had planted. Som e o f the
sunflow er plants grew to 3 ’ tall.
By O ctober m any o f the flow er heads had begun to
form seeds. A w ind and rainstorm knocked a few o f
the taller plants dow n. I left the filled seed heads to
lay on the deck in hopes the chipm unk would find
them and harvest its crop. Instead a Douglas squirrel
now visits m y deck each m orning, stuffs its cheeks
w ith seed, then scam pers o ff to unknow n territory.
