We have often been asked about the name of the paper. Some folks think it is a political statement, as in a positive, left wing, cutting edge paper, or less commonly that it is a geographical statement, that we are located on the upper left edge of America, in Oregon. These are both true to a degree, but if the full truth be known the upper left edge of the page is where you begin to write, when you write in English. It is where the words begin, and that is it. And as we write, we are waiting on two columns from one who will remain nameless, and as usual trying to figure how we will pay the printer for ten pages this month. We have somehow managed for seven years to get the paper printed, distributed, and paid for, and no one is more amazed than we are. There are literally hundreds of people who made this happen over the years; readers, friends, subscribers, volunteers, family; but when it comes to the month by month paying of the bills it’s our advertisers. We would really appreciate it, if you happen to be in a business which advertises in the Edge, if you would just mention that you saw the ad. Some of the ads you see on these pages have been with us from day one, some are new this month, but they all are helping us bring the paper to you for free, and bringing new writers and illustrators to your attention. We are proud that in a small way we have had an impact on our community, and perhaps on the wider world as well through our web site; in support of the arts and the environment, and the always elusive rational dialogue. Anyway, readers, distributors, advertisers, contributors, — oh, and me too, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! I would die to express my gratitude to the many friends, neighbors and relatives -who gave so much (ove and support after the death of my aunt, Violet L Thompson. J am particularly grateful to those who organized and participated in the memorial gathering at the Wave Crest. Violet was extremely fortunate to have such wonderful friends.
