»» Ig-I Dev. H ults ■ I < - Editorial OREGON BOOKS > if Now & Then N e w L ocation Okay, here’s Rev. Billy’s picks for Ballot measures!! There are nineteen measures to vote for statewide. We suggest our readers vote NO on all but five. We suggest a Yes vote on measures; 54, 58, 60, 64. & 67. There are two votes amongst the measures that have references to Marijuana, pot, reefer. It tends to gall us when our elected officials lie to us; in this instance, the Sheriff of Multnomah County, Chief Noelle, has stated that Marijuana is “addictive”. Well, it ain’t so. The following references are submitted. “Mayor’s Committee on Marijuana, New York City, New York, 1944”, “Allentuck & Bowman, 1942”, “Freeman, 1946”, “Fort, 1965”, “Panama Canal Zone Governor’s Committee, 1933”, “Phalen, 1943”, “Indian Hemp Commission, 1894”. “Watt, 1965”, “Criminal 5351, California District Court of Appeals, 1st Appellet District, 1964”, “United Nations, 1946, 1964”. Either the Sheriff is too ignorant to do his job or he is a liar. Which is a wrong message to send to our kids; that they can’t trust our * peace officers’. The question is, can we trust our kids with the truth, and will our kids trust us if we don’t trust them? 425 Coast Hwy SW Newport, Oregon 97365 541-574-6004 • 800-668-6105 Events • Authors • D eli Espresso • W ine I I IN AN UNJUST W ORLD... This is not meant to disparage the others in the local contest. Anyone who is willing to work for the common good by serving in local government, in our case, an un-paid position, should be encouraged, unless there are the dreaded ‘ ulterior motives’. Much like our beloved Wayne Morse, who was the only person elected to the US Senate from Oregon, or anywhere else for that matter, as a Democrat, a Republican, and an Independent, we are more interested in the results, than who gets the credit or the blame. Well, folks, you have a tough job ahead of you, as always, but we trust you will do the right thing. And the cool part is you get to. Vote, it’s fun, and sometimes it even works. £ ura Voice Mall 15031 7 3 8 -4 5 1 6 Home 15031 4 3 6 -1 2 4 6 Harpo went to his final resting place about 11:30 AM on October 13, in Dr. G oza’s clinic. My last vision o f our time together came around 6PM on the day before, when we took our last walk on the beach. Bucking a robust 3 0 MPH wind and heavy rain, w e walked along Elk Creek to the Point. His ears lifting in the wind, nose pointed southwest, he gazed at Haystack Rock and out to sea. He stood there a good two or three minutes, w hile we watched and waited. When he turned back toward us, w e knew he had said good-bye to his old tracks and trails. In the vernacular o f our hom elife, Harpo had many names, little boy, dancey dog, rubbemose, bestest boy, little runaway. His jo y s were cheese (a word he knew and that perked his ears), the beach, handouts from Osburn’s porch and treats that came home in a w hile paper bag from the Driftwood. He was famous for his ability to “fly” o ff porch roofs and decks. The highest was 16 feet from deck to dirt. He was the nemesis o f raccoons, and the words “get em!" sent him racing out the door to scatter the bandits like leaves in the wind. His love of children is legendary. Every child he knew, believed he would lay down his life to protect them. His independence led him to many friends. He was part o f June’s Garden. He had regular sleepovers at Uncle M ai’s, my niece and nephew ’s house, the home o f Jimmy, Lisa, Rocky and Elvis, and Susie used to drive him home from Osburn’s. He som etim es rode the Shuttle. He was the first tenant o f the new dog impoundment facility that I had voted funding for. He rode on the front seat o f fire trucks. He was in a play at the grade school. He was one o f the last great town dogs. His bed still sits at the foot o f our bed, with his purple collar in it. It w ill be there for a long time. (Checks or money orders only) The famous quote by Will Rodgers, “1 don't belong to an organized political party, I’m a Democrat”, rings so true these days. The Elephants are tramping down the doors of the capitals of our country, not to mention our Constitution, to cater to the Religious Righteous and the Global Corporations, and the Jackasses are whining and weeping about not being in a better world, with better people. The Donkeys want to legislate hate, and the Pachyderms want to legislate love. And they both want to get paid for it W H E R E T O O E T AM E P O S Phone: (503) 224-2647 We may eventually come to realize that chastity is no more a virtue than malnutrition. Alex Comfort We suggest everyone vote for Dr. John to remain Governor. We suggest Little Billy Sizeless check into the Shilo Inn and not come out until he gets a clue. And even though he is a registered Republican, your beloved rev. must urge you to send a message to the self- righteous right by voting a straight donkey ticket.
