We have met the enemy, and
he is us.” P„m
As it always happens, when you make a decision
based on logic, reality proves you wrong. Case in
point; Last month due to space considerations, etc.
we left out the ad for Oregon Books (the wonderful
bookstore in Newport, Oregon that deals only in
books by Oregon writers, or about Oregon). Karma
being what it is the next day we were shown the
latest publication from Saddle Mountain Press (these
are one in the same person; Darlene Dube’. Darlene
published the second edition of Uncle Mike’s Guide
to the Real Oregon Coast and if truth be known, the
first edition of Letters to Uncle Mike, though she
allowed it to be printed under the Left Coast Group
logo.)
The Oregon Book, information A to Z by Connie
Hopkins Battaile, ($29.95 Saddle Mountain Press) is
a hefty 673 pages, (the bibliography alone runs 33
pages, and is a resource in itself) with 3,500 answers
to your questions about Oregon.
Gerry Frank, Oregon booster, political gadabout,
and Oregonian columnist calls it, “perhaps the
Oregon book.”, and Lewis L. McArthur, author of
Oregon Geographical Names, (which has been the
Oregon book since 1928) calls it, “A remarkable
compilation.”
This is not just some dry list of facts and figures.
You can go skipping through this volume following
cross reference after cross reference, and start to see
quit clearly why Oregon is like it is. For visitors and
natives alike there are nuggets information they have
never seen before, some delightful, some shameful.
It makes one proud to find that a black family was
granted it’s freedom from slavery by an Oregon court
in 1853. It is embarrassing to read that in 1857 89%
of Oregon voters voted to exclude blacks from the
new state. The arrangement of the information by
categories makes it easy to find stuff you want and
fun to learn what you didn’t think of looking for, for
example, we learned that the oldest business still
operating in Oregon is the Oregonian, started in
1850, the oldest family business is Holmans Funeral
Home, 1854, and the oldest restaurant is Huber’s,
1879 (Ah, Huber’s!!!, sig h .). And did you know
that the Reed College fight song goes, “Hegel, Kant,
Marx, Spinoza! C;mon Reed, hit ‘em in the nosa!”?
Your beloved rev. loves history, like some folks
love chocolate and this is a fifty pound heart shaped
box of history, ancient and current. It also has
geography, geology, wildlife and politics down pat,
and even has a couple of maps. You can find it at
Amazon.com on the internet, or in a bookstore near
you. On the coast you can get it at The Oregon
Bookstore, Cannon Beach Books, and Jupiter’s Rare
and Used Books, because we feel this is a ‘rare’
book that will be well ‘used’. Thanks Darlene.
As we watch our world move into fall, we see the
political temperature rise, in the face of the
November election. Other temperatures also seem to
be rising, as global warming melts the glaciers from
Antarctica to Alaska. Politics either exasperates or
bores the average American. Only a small percentage
of us will vote come November. We’ve all been
talking about politics all summer, but only because
sex was involved. Nobody talks about global
warming down at the local tavern. Unless the tavern
happens to be on a low lying Pacific island, or
maybe in the Netherlands, folks feel that they can’t
make a difference. Well, folks somebody is making
a difference and it is affecting your lives and the lives
of your children and grandchildren. We make a huge
difference by our indifference. We play with our
toys, work ourselves to death, & consume to the
point of obesity. Meanwhile things get ugly.
What’s to be done? Well, Kurt Vonnegut gives a list
of seven things we must do in his book “Fates
Worse Than Death” and we thought it might help to
reprint them here.
1. Reduce and stabilize your population.
2. Stop poisoning the air, the water, and the topsoil.
3. Stop preparing for war and start dealing with your
real problems.
4. Teach your kids, and yourselves, too, while
you’re at it, how to inhabit a small planet without
helping to kill i t
5. Stop thinking science can fix anything if you give
it a trillion dollars.
6. Stop thinking your grandchildren will be OK no
matter how wasteful or destructive you may be, since
they can go to a nice new planet on a spaceship.
That is really mean and stupid.
7. And so on. Or else.
As our constant readers would guess we are quite
fond of Rule Number Seven.
Yes, eventually the question becomes, “Am I part
erf" the solution or the problem? Who is the enemy?
Is it me? Am I it? Yes, is always the answer. ‘Tag,
you’re it.” You’re it. “Or else.” Any questions?
