W h e n Rita wa s nin e years o l d she s t a r t e d w o r k i n g w e e k ­ ends a n d h o l i d a y s in a flower s h o p n e a r her hom e in Camden, N e w Jersey. She s t a r t e d h e r formal e d u c a t i o n at O h i o S t a t e C o l ­ lege, majoring in creative writing. In t h e late 1970's, a friend w h o h a d m o v e d to Ca n n o n Beach and w o r k e d at t h e R o u n d T a b l e R e s t a u r a n t u r g e d R i t a to v i s i t C a n n o n Beach. Rit a fell in love w i t h t h e w i l d s of O r e ­ g o n and m o v e d h e r e permanently. Mike's family moved to Hillsboro, O r e g o n fro m Ora n g e County, C alifornia. While v i s i t i n g his b r o t h e r an d wife who were living in Cannon Beach, Mik e a lso d e c i d e d to sta y in this are a an d s t a r t e d w o r k i n g for T o n y Douglas, a lan d s c a p e a r c h i t e c t w h o o w n e d a business called North Coast Landscaping. W h i l e w o r k i n g for Douglas, Mik e g a i n e d h a n d s - o n experience in th e world of h o r t i c u l t u r e an d the r e q u i r e ­ m e n t s for m a i n t a i n i n g formal landscaping. C a n n o n Beach, w i t h its forests, o c e a n an d streams, a lso p r o v i d e d a r e a s for M i k e to p u r s u e hi s int e r e s t s of h u n t ­ ing, f i s h i n g an d s e a r c h i n g the forests for w i l d mushrooms. Mutual int e r e s t s soon b r o u g h t the c o u p l e t o g e t h e r and in 1980 Mik e a n d R i t a w e r e m a r ­ ried. T h e y s t a r t e d a p a r t - t i m e la n d s c a p e m a i n t e n a n c e b u s i n e s s w i t h o n l y a few t o o l s and a truck. In 1984 Rit a a t t e n d e d a two-year landscape program o f f e r e d at P o r t l a n d C o m m u n i t y C o l l e g e in Portland, Oregon, an d in 1986 t h e y h i r e d their first employee. C a n n o n Beach L a n d s c a p e S e r v i c e t hen b e c a m e a p e r m a n e n t business. Their maintenance business no w includes o t h e r services, i m p r o v i n g drainage, inst a l l i n g s p r i n k l i n g systems, l a n dscape designs, and p r a c t i c a l e x p e r i ­ ence of w h a t plants g r o w bes t in o u r coas t a l zone. M i k e is a skil l e d carpenter, building decks, benches or other s t r u c t u r e s n e e d e d for gardens. They employ seven or e ight pe o p l e t h r o u g h o u t the y e a r to k e e p up w i t h the m any landscape c o n t r a c t s t hey have. In 1997 t h e y p l a n t e d some of the bulbs around other pl a n t s in Martin's curbside p l a n t i n g s on G o w e r Street. Some time ago F r a ileys b u i l t a n e w h o m e in T o l o v a n a Park w i t h s t o r a g e area. T h e i r g r o w i n g b u s i n e s s and a c q u i r e d equipment soon fi l l e d all available storage space. Recently they bought e ight acres on the eas t side of Hwy. 101 near the Warren Way / Tolovana exit. Their future pla n is to build a home, g r e e n h o u s e an d p ole b u i l d i n g large enough to hold their e x p a n d i n g i n v e n t o r y of e q u i p ­ ment. T h e y are a lso in the proc e s s of d i g g i n g a well and building a road into their property. During December and J a n u a r y for m a n y y ears Frail e y s hav e spent th e holidays in Lapenita, Nayarit, in Mexico. T h r o u g h the y e a r s t h e y b e c a m e g o o d friends w i t h a family, P e d r o and Emma an d t h e i r four daughters. T h e c o u p l e own a r e s t a u r a n t an d are v e r y p roud of giving their daughters formal education. On e girl n o w w o r k s in a local bank, anot h e r is s t u d y i n g t o be an architect. F r a ileys s pent m a n y m e m o r a b l e holidays with this family, e x p l o r i n g the jungles, d e e p sea fishing, r e l a x i n g and s w i m m i n g in the w a r m w a t e r s for a m u c h - n e e d e d vacation.
