Now & Then M O ’ S tu ff We have been having an exciting winter here on the edge, as you might have noticed M other Ocean is reclaiming a lot o f land up and down the coast, not just the imfamous ’Capes’ development in Ocean City. We would like to offer our sympathy to the families who own those homes that might soon slide into the sea Granted, they made some expensive mistakes in judgement, mistakes most o f us w ill never have the opportunity to make, and they are obviously ’rich folks' by most standards. That does not in anyway change the way they must feel when they see their dreams destroyed Economic circumstances, and social standing alone neither qualify them for scom or disqualify them from compassion They obviously share our love for the beauty o f the coast, and share the risk that we all face livin g on the edge. The noticable absence o f former Senator Hatfield in the debate over his 'San Clemente'is to be respected. It seems he stands in good company w ith Oswald West, Tom McCall, and John Kitzhaber. "This is Oregon, the beaches belong to the people." W hich brings us to Coast Watch We have mentioned this organization before; people 'adopt' a m ile o f the Oregon Coast and report at least four times a year on any changes in their mile. This provides data to see changes and could help stop problems like 'The Capes' from happening. It's simple to get involved, you don't have to live on the edge, just visit the same m ile four times a year and write a report. We, here at the Upper Left Edge, are proud to say we have adopted mile 3 11 (see map below). This year the last m ile was finally assigned! Don't let that stop you! You can jo in others who are watching your favorite stretch o f beach. The more eyes and inform ation, the better. Correction Last month we discribed fnend professor David Horowitz as a "conservative Historian" which is only partially correct He is more conservative than you beloved editor, but is not to be confused with the other David Horowitz, former activist and creator o f Ramparts magazine, who, "now reacts to his past by resorting to hysterical attacks on African- Americans, Arabs, Jewish peace activist and progressives, who violate his born-again nationalism and reactionary views." Our David is much nicer And he wrote us to say it was not uncommon that people confuse them The FBI and his late father both did on occasion I f you would like to find out what 'our' David is like you can read his books, "Beyond Left and Right: insurgency and the Establishment (1997) or a text book he co-authored, titled (no kidding) "On the Edge: The U S. in the 20th Century (1998). | rD P P E R , LEFT-EDG£u| Editor/Publisher/Janitor: The Beloved Reverend B illy Lloyd Hults Graphics Editor: The Humble Ms. Sally Louise Lackaff Copy Editor/Science Editor/Voice of Reason/Indian Country/Uncle Mike/etc.: Michael Burgess Wildlife Informant/Music Reporter at Large: Peter "Spud" Siegel Education Editor Peter Lindsey Improvisational Engineer: Dr. Karkeys Paste/Production/Proof Reader: M ym a Uhlig Few rich men own their property. We are reminded o f one o f our favorite anti-war songs that Pete Seeger sings, "Last night I had the strangest dream, I never dreamed before 1 dreamed the w orld had all agreed to put and end to war I dreamed I saw a mighty room and the room was fille d w ith men, and the paper they were signing there, said they'd never fight again. The people in the streets below were dancing round and round, and swords and guns and uniforms where scatted on the ground."
