Don’t follow leaders.
Watch your parking meters.
Yes, we have had two headlines in a row that are
Bob Dylan lyrics. Actually both from the same
song. Last month it was, “You don’t have to be a
weather man to know which way the wind blows”,
which, as was pointed out pointedly, is incorrect.
You will also find scattered throughout this issue
quotes from Dylan. So, why are we on this kick?
Well, we just read two biographies of Mr.
Zimmerman, and he played for the Pope and
$350,(XX) recently, and has always been one of our
favorite poets. Bob is one of those poets who
rhymes. Robert Zimmerman is a lot like Robert
Sendee if you look at it. He writes stories, which,
like so much oral history, have a rhythm, a rhyme
scheme, if you will, so that people can easily
remember how the story goes. Because oral history,
like all history, is of no value if we forget it. So let’s
take Bob’s message and bring it down to the now.
Don’t follow leaders. Locally, in Oregon, one of our
elected leaders, Rep. Bob Smith, R-Ore, hosted a
field trip for his fellow leaders in the US Congress to
show them the terrible condition of the eastern
Oregon forests, to encourage them to allow
ciearcutting, and “better wilderness management”
(yes, ‘wilderness management’ is an oxymoron).
Russell Sadler wrote a wonderful piece in the Big
“O” called “Dead trees, Live issue” that states “One
hundred years of scientific management, including
50 years of ruthless fire suppression, suggest the
Native Americans understood something about the
semi-arid, fire-adapted land they inhabited that early
foresters did not.” We might add current foresters
seem to be having a similar problem; no, our current
leaders, political and industrial, don’t inspire us to
follow.
Now, watch your parking meters. It seems to
harken back to ‘if you live outside the law you must
be honest’; you’ve got to follow the rules. The rules
being the social contract: you don’t hit me, I don’t
hit you. It’s the deal the people make with the people
in a democracy. The leaders are subject to the deal
too. But as any politician or lawyer will tell you, the
law or the deal is a living thing, subject to change.
And if we don’t follow leaders, we must make the
changes ourselves, as the people. Which is the joy
of living in the first stale that adopted the initiative,
recall and referendum system.
The people get to decide about the parking meters.
51% of Oregonians who voted in the last general
election voted yes on Measure 16, which legalized
the traditional practice among family doctors to help a
dying patient to end their life with some dignity. The
leaders of the current Oregon Legislature have
apparently been convinced by the powers that be in
the nasty little business of power lobbying, that those
thousands of voters didn’t understand that they were
voting on a life and death issue. This voter for one
certainly did, and cast his vote seriously because he
knew how important it was. The “Establishment”
newspaper of record (we can call them that because
they called the Edge an underground paper once, we
contend that we are a sea-level paper.), the
Oregonian, recently did a five part editorial in
support of the Legislature’s attempt to repeal
Measure 16; Measure 51. This propaganda piece
was possibly the most offensive thing we’ve read in
years, parroting the dogma, and the condescending
tone of the folks spending millions (no doubt some at
the big “O”) on this campaign of fear. The editorial
pointed out that the pills one might take to end one’s
pain are bitter. That you might even throw up. Does
anyone who has had a loved one dying in pain;
unable to control their bodily functions, suffering
humiliation in front of those they love day after day;
have a problem with vomit? Perhaps the silliest
argument against a doctor administering barbituates
to a dying person is that they may have dangerous
side-effects. Excuse me? Like they might cause
cancer? Or even death? Does ‘Duh’ mean anything
to these folks? No, the fight here seems to be
between dogma and democracy, dollars and dignity.
You know which side your beloved reverend is on:
as usual, the one with the least money. But money
stops in the voting booth, or in this case the mailbox,
and the people have to take responsibility. No laws
or people are perfect, but we have to trust each other
to decide what’s right for us, the people, not the

leaders. The people who plug the parking meters;
our fathers, our mothers, our children, our lovers,
our friends. There is not much room for the
government or politics in that decision. That is why
the only way it would ever get decided is the way it
was decided, by an initiative from the people. And
of course the only way it would be challenged is by
the government and the politicians, and folks with a
lot of money and an agenda. That California crap
don’t work here. We have noticed once the people
of Oregon decide, especially when it is a tough
decision, they don’t back down. The Upper Lelt
Edge asks its readers who are registered Oregon
Voters, if they have not already voted, to vote NO on
Measure 51. And to our friends who have a serious
moral or religions problem with this vote, we
suggest that when it comes to the secular rights ol
citizens, that they “render unto Caesar, that which is
Caesar’s, and unto...” well, you know the rest. The
way we spend our last precious moments of life
certainly do depend on it.
Oh, and as if we had to remind you, vote YES on
Measure 52; education is always a good investment.

Well, once again we write about the World Series
without a hint of bitterness that our Cubs have
lengthened their period of absence from the fall classic
to oh, eighty six years.... but who’s counting. The
Ohio First People are playing the Florida Fish, and that's
all there is to it. Rude comments have appeared in the
public media about having a Baseball team named after a
fish, although, the Marlin is a very large fish known for
his fighting stamina There was once a learn in Major
I-eague Baseball called the Spiders and in 1924 the World
Series was won by a team that went by the name of the
Washington Senators. (The mind boggles at how long
the games must have lasted and what the mascot looked
like.) In spite of the unfortunate name the Floridian Nine
had the advantage of the wisdom and instincts ol one of
our all time favorite managers, Mr James Leyland
Leyland’s Sisyphus like career of taking the cheapest
major leaguers the aptly named Pirates would provide
him each spring, and pushing them up the standings to a
respectable position, and an occasional pennant, then
seeing them sold off each winter, resonates with Cubs
fans. And, guess what, he won Yes, in what will go
down in baseball history as one of the greatest seventh
games in the annals of the World Series, this $100
million dollar team made up of rookies, rejects, refugees
and the very rich played excellent baseball. The new
kids played classic fundamental blue collar baseball,
guided by a man who described himself second string
catcher in Double A, and who dedicated the win to rank
and file players who never give up on the dream There
is always hope.
