Roycrofters hy Dard Hunter, whose work
there between 1902 and 1011 helped define
the classic styles of the A rts & Crafts

T he letters upon which Vita & Virginia is based
reflect the intense personal lives and affairs o f these
accom plished public w om en, V irginia W oolf and
Vila Sackville-W est. T heir tw o separate worlds
m erge in these letters, beginning in 1922, and we see
their relationship blossom until Virginia’s death in
1941.
T hese wom en are presented in a dialectic that
contrasts the hum or o f everyday existence with the
tragic circum stances o f the wars, including the death
o f V irginia’s beloved nephew Julian in the Spanish
Civil W ar (1937). Details that m ight seem tedious
are instead exposed to reveal the creative genius of
these revolutionary wom en as they find release and
intim acy in a tim e o f fear, suspicion, death, and
destruction. In this play, we discover the wide
em otional range that their friendship encompassed.
