We recently received a letter from a reader in Los Gatos, California, with a book review of Papillon, and a question that bothered us. He said that our last issue seemed less political and wondered if we were going to become more ‘literary”. Don’t they wish!! No, we are still quite upset with what passes for business as usual in this land of the free. Our views on the much touted ‘War on Drugs’ are well known, but a recent story brought the rage back to the throat. It seems there was this young shepherd tending his flock, and instead of seeing a star that would lead him to one who would talk of peace, he saw death from the weapon of an American Marine following ‘the rules of engagement’ in the aforementioned war. It’s like any other war, some people make lots of money, some people die, some are innocent, some are guilty. Well, we know for sure that at least one young shepherd won’t be getting high while he’s tending his flock. Have we no shame, will we murder and imprison our children, destroy our freedoms, undermine respect for the law, in the name of what? A Drug Free America? What’s next a Sex Free America? ex We spend ten times more on law enforcement and prisons, than it would take to educate and rehabilitate the most tragic victims of drugs. We have to separate use and abuse as we do with the legal drugs. The rights and responsibilities of rational drug use, be it alcohol, caffeine, tobacco, pot, opiates, or stimulants, should be taught along with the rights and responsibilities of our sexuality. Is this too tough? Are we so self righteous, that will kill our children to save them. If not, what can be done? Well, a nice letter to Dr. John, our Governor here in Oregon, telling him that his failure to veto the recriminalization of pot, was a mistake. Support the ballot measure campaign to decriminalize. For our readers in other states, well, there is a ballot measure on the Washington ballot this next time, and California folks can fight the good fight to get the herb to those who need it for medical as well as emotional or spiritual reasons. We came upon a old volume recently (one of the joys of having a used book store) that is relevant to the dialogue, it’s “Not the Law’s Business?” (an examination of homosexuality, abortion, prostitution, narcotics, and gambling in the United States) from the National Institute of Mental Health, Center for Studies of Crime and Delinquency, edited by Gilbert Geis, Ph.D., University of California, printed by the US Government Printing Office in 1972. In the section on drugs (narcotics) is included a statement by the “student writers of the Virginia Law Review after they made an intensive review of legal, medical, and social evidence concerning marihuana. It is quoted in length because it bears not only on the problem of marihuana legislation, but also on the fundamental issue of the proper manner in which a democracy ought to employ its criminal law.” Continued on Page 2... Also, those who opted for copies of “Uncle Mike’s Guide”, and all the rest of our readers who showed their support for Community Radio on the Edge. We urge our readers around the country to support their local radio stations, television stations, and of course newspapers. There will be Spanish classes offered, again this winter in Cannon Beach, and Seaside begining Sept. 22, 4pm-7pm with the first session at the Community Senior Center in Seaside, for beginners in public agencies, (teachers, police, etc.), meeting on Mondays. Tuesdays and Thursdays starting the 23rd an intermediate class will meet in the Cannon Beach Bible Church at 6:30. And also on Thursdays from 1 to 3 PM a class for travelers begins on the 25th. Call Clatsop Community College at 738-3346 or Jeanie McLaughlin 436-2412 for more information. Cool, huh? So anyway, that is why the Edge is larger this month, yes!!!, and that is why we must again encourage you to reach out to folks that can advertise, write, draw, help, send us serious money. This is a great deal of fun, and even after six years it still seems to be getting better, so call us at the ocean. She had the game on and ‘da bums’ were playing our ‘cubbies’. With the score three to nothing in the fifth, we were forced to depart for our weekly poker game. As we were leaving she called, “bet the Dodger’s win," to which we replied, “Okay, bet you a buck, pay you tomorrow.” At the bookstore a few days later, a Cubs fan revealed himself, and shared this quip, “What do a barren bear and the World Series have in common?
