So, I ju st finished reading U ncle M ike’s G uide to the Real O regon Coast, and my father calls m e up and asks how the w eather is dow n here. He lives in Seattle and says it’s pouring rain, this is the w ettest spring he rem em bers ever. H e’s 72. S o I think, hm m m , U ncle M ike, M aybe it’s m ore than ju st funny stories in your book. W e are m olding. If this is the w ettest spring in at least 72 years, then 1 know it isn’t ju st m e. S o later, at w ork, a brow sing yellow rain coat clad tourist tells me (in an undeniably irritated m anner) that they ju st left Portland. It was sunny there, so they thought they’d com e out to the beach, but it’s d um ping outside as she says this. I say, “ W ell we do get m ore rain here than P o rtla n d .” She says, '"More rain than P ortland)" Like there is really som ething w rong with m e and this w hole dam n place. T hen her tone changes, and in a strangely conciliatory, pleading voice she asks, in all sincerity, “ W hen does the rain stop?” A t this point, 1 am w ishing U ncle M ike w ere here to answ er this. I could not have phrased the question to the gods any m ore succinctly or innocently than this. A goofy sm ile threatened to betray my professional em ployee/clerk/hospitality functionary persona, a grin w hich I could not w ipe away. “ W hen does the rain stop?” I have to repeat this back, you know , to m ake sure I heard it right. “ W ell, urn, actually it doesn’t.” T hen she ignores me for a w hile, so I ask her a question to lighten the air. “ W here are you from ?” “ C hicago.” Flatly stated. 1 cannot think o f the next thing to say, so I d o n ’t. In a m inute she heads out anyw ay, calling to her kids to com e and see the ant farm next door, som ething about new ants, and I go back to w hatever it w as I w as doing. T hose w ords keep repeating them selves to m e, such a nice cadence. W hen does the rain stop? Like a lonely m antra echoing out into the cosm os. 1 catch m yself staring out the w indow , to the aggressive pound o f the dow npour, and it seem s to be chuckling too. I think o f U ncle M ike’s book and his m any references to the m oist aspects o f our c lim a te / How aptly this little exchange fits even a tongue-in-cheek characterization such as this, and, borrow ing from M r. Barry, “I am not m aking this up”. N ow w e sodden outcasts from the drier interior regions have indisputable, written legitim acy for out dam p perspectives. T hanks U ncle Mike! A s to the lingering question, ‘w hen does the rain stop?’ w ell, I guess that’s sort o f w hat death is about, right?
