Thanks, we say. Then we get a newsletter from our dear friends at Sherwood Forest on the Long Beach Peninsula. Sherwood used to be a summer camp in the early seventies, and your beloved rev was a counselor there one summer (yes, he did look dashing with his whistle, and bandanna) and caretaker for most of a winter Well, it seems Susie Griener- Andrews and her husband Gordy are living there, and trying to keep up the taxes, etc. Now, don’t tell anyone, but Edge readers, they are willing to rent it out as a primitive camp site. They had a pretty good time with a Dulcimer group of about fifty, Bear in mind, these are gentle good people who love and respect this land, so no weird stuff But if you have need of a place for a week-end or so of peace on the Willapa Bay, give Susie a call at (360)665-4733 or better yet write her at Box 89, Nahcotta, WA 98638. When you travel east of the Mississippi, you quickly realize that answering “Washington” confuses things, and maybe even raises a barrier, when you’re asked “Where you from?’’ East of the Mississippi, most people think Washington, D C., when you say "Washington,- and don't wait to hear if “D C.” is part of it. The barrier goes up, perhaps only in my imagination, but it’s apparent that a lot of people don’t like Washington (DC that is). In the South, Washington represents the federal government, that old foe in the War between the States In rural areas, just about anywhere, Washington represents urban, moneyed, corporate, megalomaniacs out to over regulate the rest of us. For some folks, Washington represents the liberal (if not worse) central government that imposes oppressive, irreligious, and anti-family programs. So in an effort to assure a chance of hearing what people really thought, we shifted our response to “the state of Washington.” This typically brought out “ooh, way out there- God’s country.” Usually people had only the vaguest notion of what “God’s country" consists o f “It’s real cold up there, isn’t it?” “You have a lot of trees, don’t you?" “That’s near California, isn't it?” The next layer was "What town?” and we’d answer Ilwaco, expecting no one to know where that was (Occasionally someone did-usually a sport fisherman or a bicyclist w ho had done Highw ay 101 from border to border.) “That near Seattle?” “No, it’s at the mouth of the Columbia.” The fact that one of the world’s major rivers is unknow n for all practical purposes to so many Americans is pretty amazing. Most seemed to have never heard of it. Then, “Oh, that must be up by Hood River?” (This happens even in the Pacific Northwest-people can’t keep their headwaters and river mouths straight.) Then the minor geography lesson: "The headwaters of the Columbia are in Canada. The Columbia system drains an area the size ol France. The river is about four miles across at the mouth Ilwaco is the last fishing port before the river dumps into the ocean.” After a while, we just said, "We live in Ilwaco, Washington, the lower left corner of the state. Oui house is two blocks from the Columbia River and about half a mile from the Pacific as the crow flies ” ed- P O.
